| the men of Jericho built: Such was their custom, these would build here [their section] of the wall of the city until [the part] they were responsible for was completed, and then others would build next to the first construction. Such was their custom, one after another, until the entire wall was built. |

בנו אנשי ירחו:
שכך היו מנהגם הללו היו בונים כאן בחומת העיר עד תשלום בניינה המוטל עליהם והאחרים היו בונים סמוך לבנין הראשון וכך היה מנהגם בזה אחר זה עד שנבנית כל החומה:

| And next: As in (Num. 2:20) “Next to him, the tribe of Manasseh” , near him, and such is its explanation, next to the construction, and Scripture was not particular in its choice of words. Sometimes it says ודי לע, and sometimes it says וילו. “And next to them he repaired.” |

| a throne for the governor of the land beyond the river: The [people of] the land beyond the river built a throne for the governor of the land beyond the river to sit upon. |

| 8Next to him Uziel the son of Haraiah, [of the] goldsmiths, repaired, and next to him, Hananiah the son of the perfumers repaired, and they filled Jerusalem until the broad wall. |

| and opposite his house: his lot fell to build, for his house was near that place of the wall of the city. |

| 11Malkijah the son of Harim and Hashub the son of Pahath-Moab repaired a second measure, and [also] the Tower of the Furnaces. |

יאמִדָּ֣ה שֵׁנִ֗ית הֶֽחֱזִיק֙ מַלְכִּיָּ֣ה בֶן־חָרִ֔ם וְחַשּׁ֖וּב בֶּן־פַּחַ֣ת מוֹאָ֑ב וְאֵ֖ת מִגְדַּ֥ל הַתַּנּוּרִֽים: |
| a second measure: Just like the measurement which his friend built before [him], so he also built like [his friend.] |

מדה שנית:
כאותה מדה אשר בנה חבירו של מעלה גם הוא בנה כמותו:

| a second measure: in the building of the wall. The expression of measure is inappropriate for the building of the gates because they have [a measure] only in the building of a part of the wall, for we do not find in the entire chapter of the building of the gates the expression of a measure. |

מדה שנית:
בבנין החומה. אינו נופל לומר ל' מדה בבנין השערים לפי שאין להם כי אם בבנין חלק של חומה שלא מצינו בכל הפרשה בבנין השערים ל' מדה:

| the Tower of the Furnaces: He also built a tower by that name. All these towers in the chapter were built in the wall around the city. |

| 13Hanun and the dwellers of Zanoah repaired the Gate of the Valley; they built it, and they erected its doors, its locks, and its bolts, and a thousand cubits in the wall until the Dung Gate. |

In the word לְפִּלְכּוֹ, the “kaff” has a “dagesh,” as one says from מֶלֶךְ, מַלְכּוֹ, from עֶבֶד, עַבְדוֹ, so does one say from פֶּלֶךְ, פִּלְכּוֹ, for [if] the last letter of the noun is one of the letters “beth”, “gimmel”, “daleth”, “kaff”, “pey,” or “tav,” it is punctuated with a “dagesh.” |

| opposite the ascent to the armory: opposite the place where the mighty men would ascend to the weapons. According to the simple interpretation of the verse, it appears that there was a place near the wall where the mighty men kept their weapons, as it is stated: (II Kings 10:2) “… and cities (sic) of fortification and arms.” |

| and the tower that juts out: There was one tower in the wall that jutted out and protruded from within. |

| 26And the Nethinites dwelt in the Ophel until opposite the Water Gate to the east and the tower that juts out. |
|
כווְהַ֨נְּתִינִ֔ים הָי֥וּ יֹֽשְׁבִ֖ים בָּעֹ֑פֶל עַ֠ד נֶ֜גֶד שַׁ֚עַר הַמַּ֙יִם֙ לַמִּזְרָ֔ח וְהַמִּגְדָּ֖ל הַיּוֹצֵֽא: |

| 27After him the Tekoites repaired a second measure, from opposite the great tower that juts out until the wall of the Ophel. |

כזאַֽחֲרָ֛יו הֶֽחֱזִ֥יקוּ הַתְּקֹעִ֖ים מִדָּ֣ה שֵׁנִ֑ית מִנֶּ֜גֶד הַמִּגְדָּ֚ל הַגָּדוֹל֙ הַיּוֹצֵ֔א וְעַ֖ד חוֹמַ֥ת הָעֹֽפֶל: |
| 28Above the Gate of the Horses the priests repaired, each one opposite his house. |

כחמֵעַ֣ל | שַׁ֣עַר הַסּוּסִ֗ים הֶֽחֱזִ֙יקוּ֙ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים אִ֖ישׁ לְנֶ֥גֶד בֵּיתֽוֹ: |
| each one opposite his house: Each one was building opposite his house. |

איש לנגד ביתו:
כל אחד היה בונה כנגד ביתו:

| 29After him Zadok the son of Immer repaired opposite his house, and after him Shemaiah the son of Shechaniah, the guardian of the Eastern Gate, repaired. |

| 30After him Hananiah the son of Shelemiah and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph repaired a second measure; after him Meshullam the son of Berechiah repaired opposite his chamber. |

לאַֽחֲרָ֨יו (כתיב אַֽחֲרָ֨י) הֶֽחֱזִ֜יק חֲנַנְיָ֣ה בֶן־שֶֽׁלֶמְיָ֗ה וְחָנ֧וּן בֶּן־צָלָ֛ף הַשִּׁשִּׁ֖י מִדָּ֣ה שֵׁנִ֑י אַֽחֲרָ֣יו הֶֽחֱזִ֗יק מְשֻׁלָּם֙ בֶּן־בֶּ֣רֶכְיָ֔ה נֶ֖גֶד נִשְׁכָּתֽוֹ: |
| and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph: Zalaph had many sons, and Hanun was the sixth. |

וחנון בן צלף הששי:
בנים הרבה היו לו לצלף וחנון הוא הששי:

| 31After him Malkijah the son of Hatzorefi repaired until the house of the Nethinites and the peddlers, opposite the Hammifkad Gate, and until the ascent to the tower. |
|
לאאַֽחֲרָ֣יו (כתיב אַֽחֲרָ֣י) הֶֽחֱזִ֗יק מַלְכִּיָּה֙ בֶּן־הַצֹּ֣רְפִ֔י עַד־בֵּ֥ית הַנְּתִינִ֖ים וְהָרֹֽכְלִ֑ים נֶגֶד שַׁ֣עַר הַמִּפְקָ֔ד וְעַ֖ד עֲלִיַּ֥ת הַפִּנָּֽה: |
| the son of Hatzorefi: the goldsmith, and he was named after his craft. |
|
בן הצורפי:
איש הצורף ונקרא של שם אומנותו:

| 32And between the ascent to the tower and the Sheep Gate, the smiths and the peddlers repaired. |
|
לבוּבֵ֨ין עֲלִיַּ֚ת הַפִּנָּה֙ לְשַׁ֣עַר הַצֹּ֔אן הֶֽחֱזִ֥יקוּ הַצֹּֽרְפִ֖ים וְהָרֹֽכְלִֽים: |
| And between the ascent to the tower and the Sheep Gate: At the beginning of the building they began to build the Sheep Gate, as it says (verse 1): “… and they built the Sheep Gate, etc.” So did they build the wall all around, one after the other. |
|
ובין עלית הפנה לשער הצאן:
תחלת הבנין התחילו לבנות שער הצאן שנאמר ויבנו את שער הצאן וגו' כך היו בונין החומה מסביב בזה אחר זה:

| 33And it came to pass when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he became wroth and was very angry, and he ridiculed the Jews. |
|
לגוַיְהִ֞י כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֧ר שָׁמַ֣ע סַנְבַלַּ֗ט כִּֽי־אֲנַ֚חְנוּ בוֹנִים֙ אֶת־הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה וַיִּ֣חַר ל֔וֹ וַיִּכְעַ֖ס הַרְבֵּ֑ה וַיַּלְעֵ֖ג עַל־הַיְּהוּדִֽים: |
| 34And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and he said, "What are the feeble Jews doing? Will they let them? Will they sacrifice? Will they finish in one day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of dust, for they are burnt?" |

לדוַיֹּ֣אמֶר | לִפְנֵ֣י אֶחָ֗יו וְחֵיל֙ שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מָ֛ה הַיְּהוּדִ֥ים הָֽאֲמֵֽלָלִ֖ים עֹשִׂ֑ים הֲיַֽעַזְב֨וּ לָהֶ֚ם הֲיִזְבָּ֙חוּ֙ הַיְכַלּ֣וּ בַיּ֔וֹם הַיְחַיּ֧וּ אֶת־הָֽאֲבָנִ֛ים מֵֽעֲרֵמ֥וֹת הֶֽעָפָ֖ר וְהֵ֥מָּה שְׂרוּפֽוֹת: |
| before his brethren and the army of Samaria: before his brethren and the army of Samaria, who were the adversaries of Judea. |

מה היהודים:
מדוע היהודים כך הם עושים:

| the feeble: Heb. הָאֲמֵלָלִים, a term denoting weakness and feebleness. |
|
האמללים:
ענין חלשות ורפיון:
|
| Will they let them: Do they think that the heathens will allow them to build? |
|
היעזבו להם:
וכי הם סבורים אשר יעזבו ויניחו להם העובדי כוכבים לבנות:
|
| Will they sacrifice: Will they constantly slaughter their sacrifices for themselves as they think? |
|
היזבחו:
אם יזבחו להם את זבחיהם תמיד כמו שהם סבורים:
|
| Will they finish in one day: Will they complete the work that they started in one day? That is to say that the heathens will not permit them to complete their building. |
|
היכלו ביום:
אם יכלו וישלימו מלאכתם אשר התחילו ביום א' לומר שלא יניחום העובדי כוכבים לגמור את בניינם:
|
| Will they revive: Will they revive and repair and restore stones to their previous state to be harder and stronger than the dust? |
|
היחיו:
אם יחיו ויתקנו ויחזירו האבנים לקדמתן להיות קשות וחזקות מן העפר:
|
| from the heaps: Heb. מֵעֲרֵמוֹת, a term denoting heaps and mounds. |
|
מערמות:
ענין חמרים ותלים:
|
| for they are burnt: The stones were burnt and have become dust. So did they jeer and ridicule the building of the wall, which they were building from the burnt stones that had fallen to the earth from the fire when Jerusalem was burned. |

| 35And Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, "Even what they build, if a fox comes up and breaches the wall of their stones..?" |

להוְטֽוֹבִיָּ֥ה הָֽעַמֹּנִ֖י אֶצְל֑וֹ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר גַּם אֲשֶׁר־הֵ֣ם בּוֹנִ֔ים אִם־יַֽעֲלֶ֣ה שׁוּעָ֔ל וּפָרַ֖ץ חוֹמַ֥ת אַבְנֵיהֶֽם: |
| And Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him: Tobiah was beside Sanballat. |

וטוביה העמוני אצלו:
טוביה היה אצלו של סנבלט:

| and he said: And so he was saying and ridiculing. |
|
ויאמר:
וכך היה אומר ומלעיג:
|
| Even what they build: even this building that they are building. |
|
גם אשר הם בונים:
אף הבנין הזה אשר הם בונים:
|
| if a fox comes up: on the building to breach the wall of the city, what will become of it? That is to say that the building cannot be repaired, and whoever wishes, can come and break into it. |
|
אם יעלה שועל:
על הבנין לפרוץ חומת העיר מה יהא עליו לומר שאין לבנין תקנה וכל מי שירצה יבא ויפרוץ בו:
|
| 36"Hearken, our God, for we have been despised, and return their reproach upon their head and cause them to be despised in a land of captivity. |
|
לושְׁמַ֚ע אֱלֹהֵ֙ינוּ֙ כִּֽי־הָיִ֣ינוּ בוּזָ֔ה וְהָשֵׁ֥ב חֶרְפָּתָ֖ם אֶל־רֹאשָׁ֑ם וּתְנֵ֥ם לְבִזָּ֖ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ שִׁבְיָֽה: |
| Hearken, our God: When I heard their ridicule of us, I prayed this prayer. |
|
שמע אלהינו:
כאשר שמעתי בלעגם עלינו התפללתי תפילה זאת:
|
| in a land of captivity: that they be exiled from the land as we were exiled. |
|
בארץ שביה:
שיגלו מעל אדמתם כאשר גלינו:
|
| 37And do not conceal their iniquity and do not erase their sin from before You, for they have provoked the builders." |
|
לזוְאַל־תְּכַס֙ עַל־עֲוֹנָ֔ם וְחַטָּאתָ֖ם מִלְּפָנֶ֣יךָ אַל־תִּמָּחֶ֑ה כִּ֥י הִכְעִ֖יסוּ לְנֶ֥גֶד הַבּוֹנִֽים: |
| And do not conceal: Heb. תְּכַס וְאַל, like וְאַל תְּכַסֶה, similar to (Prov. 25:9): “… but do not divulge (תְּגָל) another’s secret,” like תְּגַלֶה. |
|
ואל תכס:
כמו ואל תכסה דוגמת וסוד אחר אל תגל (משלי כ"א) כמו אל תגלה:
|
| for they have provoked: that they have provoked the builders to ridicule them. |
|
כי הכעיסו:
אשר הכעיסו נגד הבונים להלעיגם:
|
| 38But we built the wall, and the entire wall was built to its half, and the people had a desire to build. |
|
לחוַנִּבְנֶה֙ אֶת־הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה וַתִּקָּשֵׁ֥ר כָּל־הַֽחוֹמָ֖ה עַד־חֶצְיָ֑הּ וַיְהִ֧י לֵ֥֥ב לָעָ֖ם לַֽעֲשֽׂוֹת: |
| was built: Heb. וַתִּקָשֵּׁר, lit. it was bound. When the wall was bound up and built to its half, the people were eager and anxious to complete their building of it. |
|
ותקשר:
כאשר נתקשרה החומה ונבנית עד חציה אז היה לב העם להוט ומשוך לעשות בנין החומה:
