| 1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying: |
|
אהַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁר הָיָ֣ה אֶל־יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ מֵאֵ֥ת יְהֹוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר: |
| 2Stand in the gate of the house of the Lord, and proclaim there this word, and say; Hearken to the word of the Lord, all Judah who come into these gates to prostrate yourselves before the Lord. |
|
בעֲמֹ֗ד בְּשַׁ֙עַר֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהֹוָ֔ה וְקָרָ֣אתָ שָּׁ֔ם אֶת־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ שִׁמְע֣וּ דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֗ה כָּל־יְהוּדָ֚ה הַבָּאִים֙ בַּשְּׁעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה לְהִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֹ֖ת לַֽיהֹוָֽה: |
| 3So said the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; Improve your ways and your deeds, I will allow you to dwell in this place. |
|
גכֹּֽה־אָמַ֞ר יְהֹוָ֚ה צְבָאוֹת֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הֵיטִ֥יבוּ דַרְכֵיכֶ֖ם וּמַֽעַלְלֵיכֶ֑ם וַֽאֲשַׁכְּנָ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם בַּמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה: |
| 4Do not rely on false words, saying: The Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord are they. |
|
דאַל־תִּבְטְח֣וּ לָכֶ֔ם אֶל־דִּבְרֵ֥י הַשֶּׁ֖קֶר לֵאמֹ֑ר הֵיכַ֚ל יְהֹוָה֙ הֵיכַ֣ל יְהֹוָ֔ה הֵיכַ֥ל יְהֹוָ֖ה הֵֽמָּה: |
| The Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord, etc.: Three times a year you appear before Me. |
|
היכל ה' היכל ה' היכל ה':
תלת זימנין בשעתא אתון מתחזין קדמוהי:
|
| 5For if you improve your ways and your deeds, if you perform judgment between one man and his fellowman, |
|
הכִּ֚י אִם־הֵיטֵיב֙ תֵּיטִ֔יבוּ אֶת־דַּרְכֵיכֶ֖ם וְאֶת־מַֽעַלְלֵיכֶ֑ם אִם־עָשׂ֚וֹ תַֽעֲשׂוּ֙ מִשְׁפָּ֔ט בֵּ֥ין אִ֖ישׁ וּבֵ֥ין רֵעֵֽהוּ: |
| 6[if] you do not oppress a stranger, an orphan, or a widow, and you do not shed innocent blood in this place, and you do not follow other gods for your detriment, |
|
וגֵּ֣ר יָת֚וֹם וְאַלְמָנָה֙ לֹ֣א תַֽעֲשֹׁ֔קוּ וְדָ֣ם נָקִ֔י אַֽל־תִּשְׁפְּכ֖וּ בַּמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וְאַֽחֲרֵ֨י אֱלֹהִ֧ים אֲחֵרִ֛ים לֹ֥א תֵֽלְכ֖וּ לְרַ֥ע לָכֶֽם: |
| 7I will allow you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave your forefathers from days of yore to eternity. |
|
זוְשִׁכַּנְתִּ֚י אֶתְכֶם֙ בַּמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה בָּאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֖תִּי לַֽאֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם לְמִן־עוֹלָ֖ם וְעַד־עוֹלָֽם: |
| 8Behold, you rely on false words, of no avail. |
|
חהִנֵּ֚ה אַתֶּם֙ בֹּֽטְחִ֣ים לָכֶ֔ם עַל־דִּבְרֵ֖י הַשָּׁ֑קֶר לְבִלְתִּ֖י הוֹעִֽיל: |
| 9Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, offer up to Baal, and follow other gods that you know not, |
|
טהֲגָנֹ֚ב | רָצֹ֙חַ֙ וְֽנָאֹ֗ף וְהִשָּׁבֵ֥עַ לַשֶּׁ֖קֶר וְקַטֵּ֣ר לַבָּ֑עַל וְהָלֹ֗ךְ אַֽחֲרֵ֛י אֱלֹהִ֥ים אֲחֵרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־יְדַעְתֶּֽם: |
| Will you steal, murder, etc.: This is a question. Will you do all these, and should the Temple of the Lord avail for you? |
|
הגנוב רצוח וגו':
בתמיה וכי אלה תעשו ויועיל ההיכל לכם:
|
| 10And will you come and stand before Me in this house, upon which My name is called, and say, "We are saved," in order to commit all these abominations? |
|
יוּבָאתֶ֞ם וַֽעֲמַדְתֶּ֣ם לְפָנַ֗י בַּבַּ֚יִת הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִֽקְרָא־שְׁמִ֣י עָלָ֔יו וַֽאֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם נִצַּ֑לְנוּ לְמַ֣עַן עֲשׂ֔וֹת אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַתּֽוֹעֵבֹ֖ת הָאֵֽלֶּה: |
| 11Has this house upon which My name is called, become a cave of profligate men in your eyes? I, too, behold I have seen it, says the Lord. |
|
יאהַמְעָרַ֣ת פָּֽרִצִ֗ים הָיָ֨ה הַבַּ֧יִת הַזֶּ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־נִקְרָא־שְׁמִ֥י עָלָ֖יו בְּעֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם גַּ֧ם אָֽנֹכִ֛י הִנֵּ֥ה רָאִ֖יתִי נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה: |
| Has… a cave of profligate men?: Was this house in your eyes? This is a question. |
|
המערת פריצים:
היה בעיניכם הבית הזה בתמיה:
|
| behold I have seen: that it is so in your eyes. |
|
הנה ראיתי:
שכך הוא בעיניכם:
|
| 12For go now to My place that is in Shiloh, where I caused My name to rest at first, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel. |
|
יבכִּ֣י לְכוּ־נָ֗א אֶל־מְקוֹמִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּשִׁיל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר שִׁכַּ֧נְתִּי שְׁמִ֛י שָׁ֖ם בָּרִֽאשׁוֹנָ֑ה וּרְאוּ֙ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂ֣יתִי ל֔וֹ מִפְּנֵ֕י רָעַ֖ת עַמִּ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל: |
| 13And now, because you have committed all these acts, says the Lord, and I spoke to you, going early and speaking, but you did not hearken, and I called you, but you did not respond. |
|
יגוְעַתָּ֗ה יַ֧עַן עֲשֽׂוֹתְכֶ֛ם אֶת־כָּל־הַמַּֽעֲשִׂ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה וָֽאֲדַבֵּ֨ר אֲלֵיכֶ֜ם הַשְׁכֵּ֚ם וְדַבֵּר֙ וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֔ם וָֽאֶקְרָ֥א אֶתְכֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א עֲנִיתֶֽם: |
| 14And I will do to the house upon which My name is called, upon which you rely, and to the place that I gave you and your forefathers, as I did to Shiloh. |
|
ידוְעָשִׂ֜יתִי לַבַּ֣יִת | אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִֽקְרָא־שְׁמִ֣י עָלָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֚ר אַתֶּם֙ בֹּֽטְחִ֣ים בּ֔וֹ וְלַ֨מָּק֔וֹם אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תִּי לָכֶ֖ם וְלַֽאֲבֹֽתֵיכֶ֑ם כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי לְשִׁלֽוֹ: |
| as I did to Shiloh: in the days of Eli. |
|
כאשר עשיתי לשילו:

|
| 15And I will cast you away from My presence as I cast all your brothers, all the seed of Ephraim. |
|
טווְהִשְׁלַכְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם מֵעַ֣ל פָּנָ֑י כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֚ר הִשְׁלַ֙כְתִּי֙ אֶת־כָּל־אֲחֵיכֶ֔ם אֵ֖ת כָּל־זֶ֥רַע אֶפְרָֽיִם: |
| as I cast, etc.: the ten tribes. |
|
כאשר השלכתי וגו':
עשרת השבטים:
|
| 16And you, pray not on behalf of this people, neither lift up cry nor prayer, and entreat Me not for I will not hear you. |
|
טזוְאַתָּ֞ה אַל־תִּתְפַּלֵּ֣ל | בְּעַד־הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֗ה וְאַל־תִּשָּׂ֧א בַֽעֲדָ֛ם רִנָּ֥ה וּתְפִלָּ֖ה וְאַל־תִּפְגַּע־בִּ֑י כִּי־אֵינֶ֥נִּי שֹׁמֵ֖עַ אֹתָֽךְ: |
| 17Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? |
|
יזהַֽאֵֽינְךָ֣ רֹאֶ֔ה מָ֛ה הֵ֥מָּה עֹשִׂ֖ים בְּעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וּבְחוּצ֖וֹת יְרֽוּשָׁלִָֽם: |
| 18The sons are gathering wood, the fathers are kindling fire, and the women are kneading dough to make starshaped cakes for the queen of the heaven and to pour libations to other gods, in order to provoke Me. |
|
יחהַבָּנִ֞ים מְלַקְּטִ֣ים עֵצִ֗ים וְהָֽאָבוֹת֙ מְבַֽעֲרִ֣ים אֶת־הָאֵ֔שׁ וְהַנָּשִׁ֖ים לָשׁ֣וֹת בָּצֵ֑ק לַֽעֲשׂ֨וֹת כַּוָּנִ֜ים לִמְלֶ֣כֶת הַשָּׁמַ֗יִם וְהַסֵּ֚ךְ נְסָכִים֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים לְמַ֖עַן הַכְעִסֵֽנִי: |
| star-shaped cakes: Heb. כַּוָנִים, the shape of a star. |
|

| to the queen of heaven: The largest star they would call מלכתהשמים, an expression of a queen, (מלכּה), and so did Jonathan render it: לכוכבתשמיא, to the female star of heaven. |

כוכב הגדול היו קורין מלכת השמים ל' מלוכה וכן ת"י לכוכבת שמיא:
|
| 19Are they provoking Me? says the Lord. Are [they] not [provoking] themselves for the shame of their faces? |
|
יטהַֽאֹתִ֛י הֵ֥ם מַכְעִסִ֖ים נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה הֲל֣וֹא אֹתָ֔ם לְמַ֖עַן בֹּ֥שֶׁת פְּנֵיהֶֽם: |
| 20Therefore, so says the Lord God: Behold, My wrath and My fury reaches this place, upon man and upon beast, upon the trees of the field and upon the produce of the soil, and it shall burn and not be quenched. |
|
כלָכֵ֞ן כֹּה־אָמַ֣ר | אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אַפִּ֚י וַֽחֲמָתִי֙ נִתֶּ֙כֶת֙ אֶל־הַמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה עַל־הָֽאָדָם֙ וְעַל־הַבְּהֵמָ֔ה וְעַל־עֵ֥ץ הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה וְעַל־פְּרִ֣י הָֽאֲדָמָ֑ה וּבָֽעֲרָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תִכְבֶּֽה: |
| reaches: Heb. נתכת, falls and reaches. Comp. (Exodus 9: 33) “and rain did not reach (נתּך) the earth;” did not reach. |
|
נתכת:

| 21So says the Lord of Hosts, the God of Israel; Add your burnt offerings upon your sacrifices and eat flesh. |
|
כאכֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהֹוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל עֹלוֹתֵיכֶ֛ם סְפ֥וּ עַל־זִבְחֵיכֶ֖ם וְאִכְל֥וּ בָשָֽׂר: |
| your burnt offerings: that you offer up completely it would be better for you to add them to your peace-offerings and sacrifice them as peace-offerings and eat the flesh, for they are not acceptable before Me. Why, then, should you lose them? |
|
עולותיכם:
שאתם מקריבים כליל טוב לכם שתוסיפו אותם על שלמיכם ותקריבו אותם שלמים ותאכלו הבשר שהרי אינם מקובלות לפני ולמה תפסידום:
|
| 22For neither did I speak with your forefathers nor did I command them on the day I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning a burnt offering or a sacrifice. |
|
כבכִּ֠י לֹֽא־דִבַּ֚רְתִּי אֶת־אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ וְלֹ֣א צִוִּיתִ֔ים בְּי֛וֹם הוֹצִיאִ֥י (כתיב הוֹצִיאִ֥) אוֹתָ֖ם מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם עַל־דִּבְרֵ֥י עוֹלָ֖ה וָזָֽבַח: |
| on the day I brought them forth: The beginning of the condition was only (Exodus 19: 5): “If you hearken to My voice and keep My covenant, you shall be a peculiar treasure to Me.” |
|
ביום הוציאי אותם:
תחלת תנאי לא היתה אלא אם שמוע תשמעו בקולי ושמרתם את בריתי והייתם לי סגול' (שם יט):

| 23But this thing did I command them, saying: Obey Me so that I am your God and you are My people, and you walk in all the ways that I command you, so that it may be well with you. |
|
כגכִּ֣י אִם־אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַ֠זֶּה צִוִּ֨יתִי אוֹתָ֚ם לֵאמֹר֙ שִׁמְע֣וּ בְקוֹלִ֔י וְהָיִ֚יתִי לָכֶם֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים וְאַתֶּ֖ם תִּֽהְיוּ־לִ֣י לְעָ֑ם וַֽהֲלַכְתֶּ֗ם בְּכָל־הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲצַוֶּ֣ה אֶתְכֶ֔ם לְמַ֖עַן יִיטַ֥ב לָכֶֽם: |
| 24But they did not obey nor did they incline their ear, but walked according to [their] own counsels and in the view of their evil heart, and they went backwards and not forwards. |
|
כדוְלֹ֚א שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ וְלֹֽא־הִטּ֣וּ אֶת־אָזְנָ֔ם וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ בְּמֹ֣עֵצ֔וֹת בִּשְׁרִר֖וּת לִבָּ֣ם הָרָ֑ע וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ לְאָח֖וֹר וְלֹ֥א לְפָנִֽים: |
| in the view: Heb. בשררות, in the view of their heart, an expression related to (Num. 24:17) “I see him אשורנו.” |

בשרירות לבם:

| 25Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt until this day, I sent you all My servants the prophets, sending them day [after day] with every fresh morn. |
|
כהלְמִן־הַיּ֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָֽצְא֚וּ אֲבֽוֹתֵיכֶם֙ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וָֽאֶשְׁלַ֚ח אֲלֵיכֶם֙ אֶת־כָּל־עֲבָדַ֣י הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים י֖וֹם הַשְׁכֵּ֥ם וְשָׁלֹֽחַ: |
| sending them day [after day] every fresh morn: Every day sending them early. |
|

| 26Yet they hearkened not to Me nor did they incline their ear, but stiffened their necks; they did worse than their fathers. |
|
כווְל֚וֹא שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ אֵלַ֔י וְלֹ֥א הִטּ֖וּ אֶת־אָזְנָ֑ם וַיַּקְשׁוּ֙ אֶת־עָרְפָּ֔ם הֵרֵ֖עוּ מֵֽאֲבוֹתָֽם: |
| 27And when you will speak all of these words to them and they will not hearken to you, and you call to them and they will not answer you, |

כזוְדִבַּרְתָּ֚ אֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֶת־כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה וְלֹ֥א יִשְׁמְע֖וּ אֵלֶ֑יךָ וְקָרָ֥אתָ אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וְלֹ֥א יַֽעֲנֽוּכָה: |
| 28Then say to them: This is the nation that did not hear the voice of the Lord their God and has not received correction; out of their mouth faithfulness has disappeared, yea rooted out! |
|
כחוְאָֽמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם זֶ֚ה הַגּוֹי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לוֹא־שָֽׁמְע֗וּ בְּקוֹל֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֔יו וְלֹ֥א לָקְח֖וּ מוּסָ֑ר אָֽבְדָה֙ הָֽאֱמוּנָ֔ה וְנִכְרְתָ֖ה מִפִּיהֶֽם: |
| 29So tear off your diadem and cast it off, and let lamentation sound out over the hillocks, for the Lord has rejected and abandoned the generation of His wrath. |

כטגָּזִּ֚י נִזְרֵךְ֙ וְֽהַשְׁלִ֔יכִי וּשְׂאִ֥י עַל־שְׁפָיִ֖ם קִינָ֑ה כִּי מָאַ֣ס יְהֹוָ֔ה וַיִּטֹּ֖שׁ אֶת־דּ֥וֹר עֶבְרָתֽוֹ: |
| So tear off your diadem: Heb. נזרך גזי, tear out your hair. Comp. (Num. 11:31) “And He caused quails to fly (ויגז);” also (Job 1:20), “And he shaved (ויגז) his head.” Another explanation is that נזרך means ‘your diadem,’ an expression of greatness, and so did Jonathan render: רברביך your great ones, and so did Menahem classify it (p. 83). |

| 30For the sons of Judah have done what is evil in My eyes, says the Lord; they placed their abominations in the house upon which My name is called, to pollute it. |

לכִּֽי־עָשׂ֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יְהוּדָ֥ה הָרַ֛ע בְּעֵינַ֖י נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה שָׂ֣מוּ שִׁקּֽוּצֵיהֶ֗ם בַּבַּ֛יִת אֲשֶׁר־נִֽקְרָ֥א־שְׁמִי עָלָ֖יו לְטַמְּאֽוֹ: |
| 31And they have built the high places of Topheth which are in the valley of Ben-Hinnom, to burn their sons and daughters with fire, which I did not ordain, neither did it enter My mind. |
|
לאוּבָנ֞וּ בָּמ֣וֹת הַתֹּ֗פֶת אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּגֵ֣יא בֶן־הִנֹּ֔ם לִשְׂרֹ֛ף אֶת־בְּנֵיהֶ֥ם וְאֶת־בְּנֹֽתֵיהֶ֖ם בָּאֵ֑שׁ אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א צִוִּ֔יתִי וְלֹ֥א עָֽלְתָ֖ה עַל־לִבִּֽי: |
| the high places of Topheth: That is Molech, which was of copper, and they would heat it up from underneath it with its hands spread out and heated. And they would place the child on his hands, and he would be burnt and moan, and the priests would beat drums so that the father should not hear his son’s voice and take pity. It is called Topheth because of the drum (תּוף), Hinnom because of the child’s moaning (נהמת). |

במות התופת:
הוא המולך שהיה של נחשת ומסיקין אותו מתחתיו וידיו פשוטות וניסקות ונותנין את הילד על ידיו והוא נכוה ונוהם והכומרים היו מקישין בתופים שלא ישמע האב קול הבן ויכמרו רחמיו, תופת על שם התוף:

| which I did not ordain: with commandments that they offer up their children as sacrifices, and I did not speak to any of the prophets, and when I did speak to Abraham to slaughter his son, it did not enter My mind that he slaughter, but only to make his righteousness known. |
|
לא צויתי:
במצות שיקריבו בניהם לקרבן ולא דברתי לאחד מן הנביאים וכשדברתי לאברהם לשחוט את בנו לא עלתה על לבי שישחוט אלא להודיע צדקו:
|
| 32Therefore, behold days are coming, says the Lord, that it shall no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of the son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, and they shall bury in Topheth for lack of room. |
|
לבלָכֵ֞ן הִנֵּֽה־יָמִ֚ים בָּאִים֙ נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֔ה וְלֹא־יֵֽאָמֵ֨ר ע֚וֹד הַתֹּ֙פֶת֙ וְגֵ֣יא בֶן־הִנֹּ֔ם כִּ֖י אִם־גֵּ֣יא הַֽהֲרֵגָ֑ה וְקָֽבְר֥וּ בְתֹ֖פֶת מֵאֵ֥ין מָקֽוֹם: |
| 33And the carcasses of this people shall be for food for the fowl of the heaven and for the beasts of the earth, and no one will frighten them. |
|
לגוְֽהָ֨יְתָ֜ה נִבְלַ֨ת הָעָ֚ם הַזֶּה֙ לְמַֽאֲכָ֔ל לְע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּלְבֶֽהֱמַ֣ת הָאָ֑רֶץ וְאֵ֖ין מַֽחֲרִֽיד: |
| and no one will frighten them: i.e., no one will frighten the fowl from the carcasses. |

| 34And I will stop from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the sound of mirth and the sound of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, for the land shall be desolate. |

לדוְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֣י | מֵֽעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֗ה וּמֵֽחֻצוֹת֙ יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם ק֚וֹל שָׂשׂוֹן֙ וְק֣וֹל שִׂמְחָ֔ה ק֥וֹל חָתָ֖ן וְק֣וֹל כַּלָּ֑ה כִּ֥י לְחָרְבָּ֖ה תִּֽהְיֶ֥ה הָאָֽרֶץ: |
