Chapter 11

1And Athaliah, Ahaziah's mother, saw that her son was dead, and she rose and destroyed all those of royal descent.
2And Jehosheba, King Joram's daughter, Ahaziah's sister, took Joash the son of Ahaziah, and stole him away from among the slain children of the king, [and she concealed] him and his nurse in the bedchamber; and they concealed him from Athaliah, and he was not slain.
in the bedchamber: in the attic of the Holy of Holies, as it says (v. 3): And he was… with her in the house of the Lord. [It was] concerning him that David said, (Ps. 27:5) “For He will conceal me in His Tabernacle, He will hide me in the secrecy of His tent” [Seder Olam, ch. 18]. He calls it the bedchamber in the manner of (Song of Songs 1:13) “Between my breasts He lodges.” This is what R. Eliezer instituted, “The destruction of the bedchamber, [may He remember for an atonement” ; i.e.,] may the destruction of Your Temple atone for them.
3And he was hiding with her in the house of the Lord for six years, while Athaliah was ruling over the land.
4And in the seventh year, Jehoiada sent and took the officers of the hundreds of the mighty warriors and of the couriers, and he brought them to him to the house of the Lord; and he enacted a covenant with them, and adjured them in the house of the Lord, and showed them the king's son.
of the mighty warriors: [Heb. לַכָּרִי,] the officers of the hundreds of the mighty warriors and the officers of the hundreds of the couriers. The expression כָּרִי, which he used, and did not say לַכָּרִים, is a noun meaning a company of mighty warriors (barned in O. F.), nobility.
and he enacted a covenant with them: that they would aid him in crowning the king’s son.
5And he commanded them, saying, "This is the thing that you shall do; a third of you, of those who come on the Sabbath and the keepers of the watch of the king's palace.
a third of you, of those who come on the Sabbath: The watches would be renewed on the Sabbath (see Taanith 2:6,7), the watches of the priests and the Levites. One would enter and one would leave. He ordered the “mishmar” that was entering, to separate into three parts, one third in the king’s palace, to guard that no one rise up against the king to assassinate him,
one third in the Sur Gate, that is the eastern gate of the Temple court, the Hasarah Gate (sic). One third in the gate [called,] “After the Couriers.”: That too was one of the gates of the Temple court. Jonathan rendered: in the gate behind which was the gate of the couriers. Through the gate of the couriers one would go from the royal palace to the Temple, as it is stated at the end of this episode (v. 19). And that gate about which it is stated that the Gate of the couriers was behind it, was called in II Chron. (23:4) the gate of the Sippim.
6And a third in the Sur gate, and a third in the gate behind which was the gate of the couriers; and you shall keep the watch of the palace without taking your mind off it.
and you shall keep the watch of the palace without taking your mind off it: This watch he commanded them (sic) the first division, concerning whom he said, “And they shall keep the watch of the king’s palace” (sic).
from taking your mind off it: Guard it very diligently, that you do not take your mind off it, an expression of despair (I Sam. 27:2), that there should be no despair in this matter. The ‘mem’ of מַסָּח is part of the root. [I.e., it is part of a noun. It is not a prefix meaning from.]
7And two thirds of you, all those who leave on the Sabbath, shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord, to [guard] the king.
And two thirds of you: who I said should be in the Sur Gate and in the Gate of the Couriers, and with them all those who leave on the Sabbath, the men of the departing mishmar.
shall keep the watch of the house of the Lord, to guard the king: lest harm befall him from within the house of the Lord. Now he did not require all this except on the first Sabbath, until Athaliah was killed and her allies fled from the city.
8And you shall surround the king, each one with his weapons in his hand; and the one who comes within the ranks shall be put to death; and you shall be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.
and the one who comes within the ranks: a stranger who comes within the boundary called “sederoth,” which is the place of the king’s entry from his palace to the house of the Lord. I did not know the origin of the word “sederoth,” and Jonathan rendered it as “rows” [like] “sedarim” [with a] “samech.”
9And the officers of the hundreds did according to all that Jehoiada the priest had commanded, and each one took his men, those coming in on the Sabbath and those leaving on the Sabbath, and they came to Jehoiada the priest.
10And the priest gave the officers of the hundreds, the spears and the shields that had belonged to King David, which were in the house of the Lord.
11And the couriers stood, each one with his weapons in his hand, from the right end of the house to the left end of the house, before the altar and the house, surrounding the king.
12And he brought out the king's son, and placed the crown and the testimony, and they made him king and anointed him: and they clapped their hands and said, "Long live the king!"
the crown and the testimony: the scroll of the Law, as it is written: “And it shall be with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life” (Deut. 17:19). And our Rabbis said that the crown itself was the testimony, for anyone who is fit for the throne it would fit, whereas anyone unfit for the throne it would not fit.
13Now Athaliah heard the sound of the running people; and she came to the people, to the house of the Lord.
14And she saw, and behold, the king was standing on his stand as the custom was, and the officers and the trumpets before the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and sounding the trumpets; and Athaliah rent her garments and called out, "Revolt! Revolt!"

“Revolt! Revolt!”: Revolt! There is a revolt here.
15And Jehoiada the priest commanded the officers of the hundreds, those appointed over the army, and he said to them, "Take her out to within the ranks, and anyone who comes after her, is to be slain by the sword," for the priest had said, "Let her not be slain in the house of the Lord."
Take her out: of the Temple to the ranks and bring her by way of the areas within the ranks to the king’s palace. Do not allow her to leave through the exit of the Temple court through the city, lest she find allies who will join her.
and anyone who comes after her: to her assistance.
is to be slain: [lit.] to slay.
16And they made a place for her, and she came by way of the horses' entrance into the king's palace, and she was executed there.

17And Jehoiada enacted the covenant between the Lord and between the king and [between] the people, to be the people of the Lord, and between the king and between the people.
between the Lord and between the king and (between) the people: that the king and the people will follow the Lord, and afterwards he enacted a covenant between the king and between the people that they should be servants of the king.
18And all the people of the land came to the temple of the Baal and tore it down, its altars and its images they smashed, and Mattan the priest of the Baal they slew before the altars; and the priest set up appointees over the house of the Lord.

19And he took the officers of the hundreds and the mighty warriors and the couriers and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the Lord, and they came by way of the gate of the couriers to the king's palace; and he sat on the throne of the kings.

20And all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city quieted down, and Athaliah they had dispatched by the sword in the royal palace.
