2And it was told to Joab, "Behold the king is weeping and mourning over Absalom." |

בוַיֻּגַּ֖ד לְיוֹאָ֑ב הִנֵּ֨ה הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ בֹּכֶ֛ה וַיִּתְאַבֵּ֖ל עַל־אַבְשָׁלֽוֹם: |
3And the victory that day [turned] into mourning for all the people; for the people heard on that day, saying: "The king is saddened over his son." |

4And the people sneaked that day into the city, as people that are ashamed sneak away when they flee in battle. |

דוַיִּתְגַּנֵּ֥ב הָעָ֛ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא לָב֣וֹא הָעִ֑יר כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יִתְגַּנֵּ֗ב הָעָם֙ הַנִּכְלָמִ֔ים בְּנוּסָ֖ם בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה: |
5And the king covered his face, and the king cried with loud voice: 'O' my son Absalom, O' Absalom, my son, my son!" |

6And Joab came to the king, into the house; and he said, "Today you have embarrassed all your servants, who have today saved your life, the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines. |

10And all the people argued with one another throughout all of Israel by saying: 'The king delivered us out of the hand of our enemies, and he saved us out of the hands of the Philistines; and now he [was forced to] flee out of the land from before Absalom. |

13You are my brethren; you are my own bone and flesh; why then should you be the last to return the king? |

14And to Amasa you shall say, 'Are you not my bone and my flesh? So shall God do to me, and even more, if you shall not be [appointed] captain of the host before me continually in Joab's stead'." |

And to Amasa. The general [of Absalom’s army] you shall say: “Behold you are my sister’s son.” |

15And he swayed the heart of all the men of Judah, as [the heart of] one man; And they sent to the king, "Return you, with all your servants." |

16And the king returned, and he came to the Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal to go towards the king and to lead the king across the Jordan. |

טזוַיָּ֣שָׁב הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיָּבֹ֖א עַד־הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וִיהוּדָ֞ה בָּ֣א הַגִּלְגָּ֗לָה לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ לִקְרַ֣את הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לְהַעֲבִ֥יר אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּֽן: |
17And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjamite who was from Bahurim hurried and came down with the men of Judah to meet King David. |

יזוַיְמַהֵ֗ר שִׁמְעִ֚י בֶן־גֵּרָא֙ בֶּן־הַיְמִינִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר מִבַּֽחוּרִ֑ים וַיֵּ֙רֶד֙ עִם־אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה לִקְרַ֖את הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ דָּוִֽד: |
18And a thousand men of Benjamin were with him, and Ziba the servant of the house of Saul, and his fifteen sons and twenty servants [were also] with him, and they split the Jordan before the king. |

יחוְאֶ֨לֶף אִ֣ישׁ עִמּוֹ֘ מִבִּנְיָמִן֒ וְצִיבָ֗א נַ֚עַר בֵּ֣ית שָׁא֔וּל וַחֲמֵ֨שֶׁת עָשָֹ֥ר בָּנָ֛יו וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים עֲבָדָ֖יו אִתּ֑וֹ וְצָלְח֥וּ הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ: |
Split the Jordan. They split it with their shields. |

19And the barge crossed over to bring the king's household across, and to do what would be pleasing in his eyes. And Shimei the son of Gera fell down before the king when he was crossing the Jordan. |

יטוְעָבְרָ֣ה הָעֲבָרָ֗ה לַֽעֲבִיר֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְלַעֲשֹ֥וֹת הַטּ֖וֹב בְּעֵינָ֑יו (כתיב בְּעֵינָ֑ו) וְשִׁמְעִ֣י בֶן־גֵּרָ֗א נָפַל֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ בְּעָבְר֖וֹ בַּיַּרְדֵּֽן: |
and the barge crossed over. The ferry with which one crosses the width of the river. |

20And he said to the king, "Let not my lord impute iniquity to me, nor remember that which your servant sinned on the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, [to the degree] that the king should take it to his heart. |

21For your servant knows that I have sinned and I have therefore come this day [as] the first of all the House of Joseph to go down towards my lord the king." |

The first of all the House of Joseph. All of Israel have sinned against you and I [have sinned] more than all of them. And behold I have come to beg forgiveness. If you accept me, all of Israel will be assured that you will accept them. And If not they will fear to return to you again. |

22And Abishai the son of Zeruiah responded and said, "In exchange for this shall Shimei not be put to death for having cursed the Lord's anointed?" |

23And David said, "What is it between me and you, sons of Zeruiah, that you should become a hindrance to me today? Shall any man be put to death today in Israel? For do I not know that today I am king over Israel?" |

That today I am king. Heretofore I thought that surely such a great man would not abuse me unless my rule had been terminated by God who had commanded him, ‘Curse David.’ Now, however, that he repents, I know that I am king. |

29For all of my father's house were nothing more than deserving of death [at the hands] of my lord the king; yet you placed your servant among them that eat at your table. What more right have I to appeal further to the king?" |

30And the king said to him, "Why do you speak further concerning this matter? I say; You and Ziba divide the land." |

31And Mephibosheth said to the king, "Let him take all, now that my lord the king has arrived safely to his house." |

לגוּבַרְזִלַּי֙ זָקֵ֣ן מְאֹ֔ד בֶּן־שְׁמֹנִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וְהֽוּא־כִלְכַּ֚ל אֶת־הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ בְשִׁיבָת֣וֹ בְמַחֲנַ֔יִם כִּֽי־אִ֛ישׁ גָּד֥וֹל ה֖וּא מְאֹֽד: |

34And the king said to Barzilai, "You come over with me, and I will sustain you with me in Jerusalem." |

לדוַיֹּ֥אמֶר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־בַּרְזִלָּ֑י אַתָּה֙ עֲבֹ֣ר אִתִּ֔י וְכִלְכַּלְתִּ֥י אֹתְךָ֛ עִמָּדִ֖י בִּירוּשָׁלָֽםִ: |
35And Barzilai said to the king, "How many are the days of my life that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem? |

להוַיֹּ֥אמֶר בַּרְזִלַּ֖י אֶל־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ כַּמָּ֗ה יְמֵי֙ שְׁנֵ֣י חַיַּ֔י כִּי־אֶעֱלֶ֥ה אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יְרוּשָׁלָֽםִ: |
how many are the days of my life. That I have yet to live. |

כמה ימי שני חיי.
אשר יש לי לחיות:
|
that I should go up. They are surely few, so what pleasure could I derive from your sustaining me. |
|
כי אעלה וגו'.
הלא מעט הם, ומה הנייה יש לי בכלכולך:
|
36I am eighty years old this day, can I [still] discern between good and bad? Or can your servant taste what I eat and drink? Or can I still listen to the voice of singers and songstresses? Why then, should your servant be yet a burden to my lord the king?" |

לובֶּן־שְׁמֹנִ֣ים שָׁנָה֩ אָנֹכִ֨י הַיּ֜וֹם הַאֵדַ֣ע | בֵּין־ט֣וֹב לְרָ֗ע אִם־יִטְעַ֚ם עַבְדְּךָ֙ אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֚ר אֹכַל֙ וְאֶת־אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶשְׁתֶּ֔ה אִם־אֶשְׁמַ֣ע ע֔וֹד בְּק֖וֹל שָׁרִ֣ים וְשָׁר֑וֹת וְלָמָּה֩ יִֽהְיֶ֨ה עַבְדְּךָ֥ עוֹד֙ לְמַשָּׂ֔א אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֖י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ: |
discern between good and bad? or can I… taste what I eat. between good food and bad food. Now our Rabbis have stated that he was highly promiscuous and therefore aged rapidly. |

האדע בין טוב לרע.
בין מאכל טוב למאכל רע ואמרו רבותינו ז"ל (שבת קנב א): שטוף בזמה היה, לפיכך קפצה עליו זקנה:

37A short way shall your servant go past the Jordan with the king; but why should the king recompense me with such reward? |

לזכִּמְעַ֞ט יַעֲבֹ֧ר עַבְדְּךָ֛ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן אֶת־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְלָ֙מָּה֙ יִגְמְלֵ֣נִי הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ הַגְּמוּלָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת: |
a short way shall your servant go past. A short distance shall your servant pass over to escort you, once you cross the Jordan. |
|
כמעט יעבר עבדך.
הלויה מועטת יעבור עבדך ללותך, אחר שתעבור את הירדן:
|
with this reward. Which is not [really] good for me. |
|
הגמולה הזאת.
שאינה טובה לי:

38Allow your servant, please, to turn back, so that I may die in my own city by the grave of my father and mother. Here, however, is your servant Chimham, let him go over with my lord the king and do to him what is good in your eyes." |

לחיָֽשָׁב־נָ֚א עַבְדְּךָ֙ וְאָמֻ֣ת בְּעִירִ֔י עִ֛ם קֶ֥בֶר אָבִ֖י וְאִמִּ֑י וְהִנֵּ֣ה | עַבְדְּךָ֣ כִמְהָ֗ם יַֽעֲבֹר֙ עִם־אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַעֲשֵׂה־ל֕וֹ אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ט֖וֹב בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ: |
your servant Chimham. He was his [Barzillai’s] son. |

עבדך כמהם.

39And the king said, "Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him what seems good in your eyes. Now, anything that you shall request of me I shall do for you." |

לטוַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ אִתִּי֙ יַעֲבֹ֣ר כִּמְהָ֔ם וַאֲנִי֙ אֶעֱשֶׂה־לּ֔וֹ אֶת־הַטּ֖וֹב בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־תִּבְחַ֥ר עָלַ֖י אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לָּֽךְ: |
40And all the people went over the Jordan and the king went over; and the king kissed Barzilai and he blessed him: and he returned to his place. |

41And the king went over to Gilgal, and Chimhan went over with him: and all the people of Judah brought the king over, and also half the people of Israel. |

מאוַיַּעֲבֹ֚ר הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ הַגִּלְגָּ֔לָה וְכִמְהָ֖ן עָבַ֣ר עִמּ֑וֹ וְכָל־עַ֚ם יְהוּדָה֙ הֶעֱבִ֣ירוּ (כתיב וֶיעֱבִ֣רוּ) אֶת־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְגַ֕ם חֲצִ֖י עַ֥ם יִשְׂרָאֵֽל: |
42And, behold, all the men of Israel came to the king, and they said to the king, "Why did our brothers the men of Judah, steal you away; by having brought the king and his household over the Jordan, and all of David's men with him?" |

43And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "Because the king is near to me; [Furthermore] why are you so angered over this matter? Have we eaten of the king or has any present been gifted us?" |

מגוַיַּעַן֩ כָּל־אִ֨ישׁ יְהוּדָ֜ה עַל־אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כִּֽי־קָר֚וֹב הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ אֵלַ֔י וְלָ֚מָּה זֶּה֙ חָרָ֣ה לְךָ֔ עַל־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה הֶאָכ֚וֹל אָכַ֙לְנוּ֙ מִן־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אִם־נִשֵּׂ֥את נִשָּׂ֖א לָֽנוּ: |
Because the king is near to us. He is from my tribe. |

44And the men of Israel answered the man of Judah and he said, "I have ten parts in the king and am therefore [closer] to David than to you. Why then did you slight me? Now was not my word the very first to return my king?" And the words of the men of Judah were harsher than the words of the men of Israel. |

מדוַיַּ֣עַן אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ אֶת־אִ֨ישׁ יְהוּדָ֜ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר עֶֽשֶׂר־יָד֨וֹת לִ֣י בַמֶּלֶךְ֘ וְגַם־בְּדָוִד֘ אֲנִ֣י מִמְּךָ֒ וּמַדּ֙וּעַ֙ הֲקִלֹּתַ֔נִי וְלֹא־הָיָ֨ה דְבָרִ֥י רִאשׁ֛וֹן לִ֖י לְהָשִׁ֣יב אֶת־מַלְכִּ֑י וַיִּ֙קֶשׁ֙ דְּבַר־אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה מִדְּבַ֖ר אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל: |
we have ten parts in the king. for we are ten tribes. |

עשר ידות לי במלך.
שאנו עשרה שבטים:

to David. Although he is related to you, I am more drawn to him since I represent ten parts. |

וגם בדוד.
אף על פי שהוא קרוב לכם, אני משוך בו יותר ממך, שאני עשר ידות:

why then did you slight me?. By preceding me [in the king’s escort]. Had I not spoken first concerning the return of my king? For [indeed] our words to reinstate him came first; as it is written: “And the word of all of Israel came to the king.” |
|
ומדוע הקלותני.
להיות אתה קודם, וכי לא היה דברי ראשון להשיב את מלכי, וקודם לכן בא דברינו אליו להשיבו, כמו שכתוב למעלה (פסוק יב): ודבר כל ישראל בא אל המלך:

And the words of the men of Judah were harsher. A similar expression is: “Correct yourselves etc” (Zeph. 2:1). The words of the people of Judah seemed [more] plausible and correct for they showed them a letter that David had sent them [stating]: “Why should you be last to reinstate the king, etc.” (above v. 12). In this manner it is explained in the Aggadah. Now one may also explain ויקש as an expression of harshness and strength. And so did Jonathan translate: ‘were harsher.’ |

ויקש דבר איש יהודה.
