1And Joab the son of Zeruiah knew that the king's heart (longed) for Absalom. |

2And Joab sent to Tekoa and took from there a wise woman; and he said to her: "Please pretend to be a mourner, and please put on mourning clothes, and do not anoint yourself with oil, but be as a woman who has mourned many days for the dead. |

בוַיִּשְׁלַ֚ח יוֹאָב֙ תְּק֔וֹעָה וַיִּקַּ֥ח מִשָּׁ֖ם אִשָּׁ֣ה חֲכָמָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵ֠לֶיהָ הִֽתְאַבְּלִי־נָ֞א וְלִבְשִׁי־נָ֣א בִגְדֵי־אֵ֗בֶל וְאַל־תָּס֙וּכִי֙ שֶׁ֔מֶן וְהָיִ֕ית כְּאִשָּׁ֗ה זֶ֚ה יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים מִתְאַבֶּ֖לֶת עַל־מֵֽת: |
And Joab sent to Tekoa. Our Rabbis said, “Because olive oil is found there, [in abundance], wisdom is found there.” |

וישלח יואב תקועה.
אמרו רבותינו (מנחות פה ב): כי שמן זית מצוי שם, לכך חכמה מצויה שם:

3And come to the king and speak to him in this manner." And Joab put the words into her mouth. |

גוּבָאת֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְדִבַּ֥רְתְּ אֵלָ֖יו כַּדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַיָּ֧שֶׂם יוֹאָ֛ב אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים בְּפִֽיהָ: |
4And the woman of Tekoa spoke to the king, and fell to the ground, and prostrated herself; and she said: 'Save, O' king'. |

דוַ֠תֹּאמֶר הָאִשָּׁ֚ה הַתְּקֹעִית֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַתִּפֹּ֧ל עַל־אַפֶּ֛יהָ אַ֖רְצָה וַתִּשְׁתָּ֑חוּ וַתֹּ֖אמֶר הוֹשִׁ֥עָה הַמֶּֽלֶךְ: |
5And the king said to her: 'What ails you?' And she said: 'Truly I am a woman [who is] a widow, and my husband is dead. |

הוַיֹּֽאמֶר־לָ֥הּ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מַה־לָּ֑ךְ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר אֲבָ֛ל אִשָּֽׁה־אַלְמָנָ֥ה אָ֖נִי וַיָּ֥מָת אִישִֽׁי: |

7And, behold, the whole family rose against your handmaid, and said: "Deliver the one that struck his brother whom he slew, and so destroy also the heir; and so they shall quench my coal which is left, so as not to leave my husband a name or a remainder upon the face of the earth." |

זוְהִנֵּה֩ קָ֨מָה כָֽל־הַמִּשְׁפָּחָ֜ה עַל־שִׁפְחָתֶ֗ךָ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ תְּנִ֣י | אֶת־מַכֵּ֣ה אָחִ֗יו וּנְמִתֵ֙הוּ֙ בְּנֶ֚פֶשׁ אָחִיו֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָרָ֔ג וְנַשְׁמִ֖ידָה גַּ֣ם אֶת־הַיּוֹרֵ֑שׁ וְכִבּ֗וּ אֶת־גַּֽחַלְתִּי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִשְׁאָ֔רָה לְבִּלְתִּ֧י שִׂים־ (כתיב שִׂום־) לְאִישִׁ֛י שֵׁ֥ם וּשְׁאֵרִ֖ית עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה: |
8And the king said to the woman, "Go to your house, and I will give orders about you." |

חוַיֹּ֧אמֶר הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ אֶל־הָאִשָּׁ֖ה לְכִ֣י לְבֵיתֵ֑ךְ וַאֲנִ֖י אֲצַוֶּ֥ה עָלָֽיִךְ: |
9And the woman of Tekoa said to the king, "On me, my lord, the king, be the iniquity, and on my father's house; and the king and his throne be guiltless." |

טוַתֹּ֜אמֶר הָאִשָּׁ֚ה הַתְּקוֹעִית֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ עָלַ֞י אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ הֶעָוֹ֖ן וְעַל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑י וְהַמֶּ֥לֶךְ וְכִסְא֖וֹ נָקִֽי: |
on me be the iniquity. It is a euphemism out of respect for him as if to say: You are putting me off by saying: I will give orders about you. Now if I go on away and you do not give orders about me, upon whom then will the iniquity be? |

עלי אדני המלך העון.
כנוי הוא לכבודו, כלומר אתה מדחה אותי לאמר אני מצוה עליך ואני אלך לדרכי, ואתה לא תצוה עלי, ובני יהרג, על מי העון הזה:
|
10And the king said, "Who ever speaks to you, bring him to me, and he shall no longer continue to touch you." |
|
יוַיֹּ֖אמֶר הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ הַֽמְדַבֵּ֚ר אֵלַ֙יִךְ֙ וַֽהֲבֵאת֣וֹ אֵלַ֔י וְלֹֽא־יֹסִ֥יף ע֖וֹד לָגַ֥עַת בָּֽךְ: |
11And she said, "I beg you, let the king remember the Lord your God that the avenger of blood destroy not excessively so that they destroy not my son." And he said, "As the Lord lives, if one hair of your son shall fall to the earth." |

יאוַתֹּאמֶר֩ יִזְכָּר־נָ֨א הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ מֵהַרְבַּ֞ת (כתיב מֵהַרְבַּ֞ית) גֹּאֵ֚ל הַדָּם֙ לְשַׁחֵ֔ת וְלֹ֥א יַשְׁמִ֖ידוּ אֶת־בְּנִ֑י וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ חַי־יְהֹוָ֔ה אִם־יִפֹּ֛ל מִשַּׂעֲרַ֥ת בְּנֵ֖ךְ אָֽרְצָה: |
let the king remember the Lord your God. who concerned Himself with the length of the way [to the refuge cities] in order to save lives, as it is stated: “Lest he [the avenger] overtake him because the way is long” (Deut. 19:6). Now this is the meaning of: “So that the avenger of blood destroy not excessively; and you [still] push me off?” |

יזכר נא המלך את ה'.

12And the woman said, "May your handmaid speak a word with my lord the king?" And he said, "Speak." |

יבוַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הָאִשָּׁ֔ה תְּדַבֶּר־נָ֧א שִׁפְחָתְךָ֛ אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ דָּבָ֑ר וַיֹּ֖אמֶר דַּבֵּֽרִי: |
13And the woman said, "Why have you thought such a thing about the people of God? [now, consider not] that the king in speaking this word has done so accidentally, so that the king shall not bring back his banished one. |

יגוַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הָאִשָּׁ֔ה וְלָ֧מָּה חָשַׁ֛בְתָּה כָּזֹ֖את עַל־עַ֣ם אֱלֹהִ֑ים וּמִדַּבֵּ֨ר הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ הַדָּבָ֚ר הַזֶּה֙ כְּאָשֵׁ֔ם לְבִלְתִּ֛י הָשִׁ֥יב הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶֽת־נִדְּחֽוֹ: |
thought such a thing about the people of God.. How have you thought such a thing, i.e., that you suspected Israelites of coming to kill another one with neither witnesses nor [mandatory] warning. |

ולמה חשבתה כזאת.
שחשדת לישראל, שיבאו להרוג את השני בלא עדים והתראה:
|
that the king in speaking this word has done so accidentally. This thing that you decreed for others, i.e., that which you said to me, “not a hair of your son shall fall,” now that I have made it apparent to you that it all related only to your [own] two sons, do not have regrets saying: I stated this accidentally, and behold I am retracting myself, so that the king shall not [be forced to] bring back his son who was banished from him and fled. |

ומדבר המלך הדבר הזה כאשם.
והדבר הזה שחרצת לאחרים, שאמרת לי לא יפול משערת בנך ארצה, עכשיו שאגלה לך שאין הדבר הזה אלא על שני בניך, אל תתחרט לאמר דברתי זה כאשם, והנני חוזר בי, לבלתי השיב המלך את אבשלום בנו שנדחה ממנו וברח לו:

14For die we must, and [are] as water that is spilt on the ground which cannot be gathered up again; and God favors not a soul, but He devises means that he that is banished be not cast from Him. |

15And now my motive for having come to speak of this thing to the king my lord [is] because the people have made me afraid; and your maidservant said: I will now speak to the king, perhaps the king will perform the request of his handmaid. |

טווְ֠עַתָּה אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֜אתִי לְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל־הַמֶּ֚לֶךְ אֲדֹנִי֙ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה כִּ֥י יֵֽרְאֻ֖נִי הָעָ֑ם וַתֹּ֚אמֶר שִׁפְחָֽתְךָ֙ אֲדַבְּרָה־נָּ֣א אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אוּלַ֛י יַעֲשֶֹ֥ה הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶת־דְּבַ֥ר אֲמָתֽוֹ: |

because the people have made me afraid. They frightened me from seeking out my lord regarding his son lest he be angry with me. |

I will now speak. in this fashion, for perhaps [the king] will perform, etc. |

ותאמר שפחתך אדברה נא.

16For the king will hear, to deliver his maidservant from the hand of the man [that would] destroy me and my son together out of the inheritance of God. |
|
טזכִּ֚י יִשְׁמַ֣ע הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לְהַצִּ֥יל אֶת־אֲמָת֖וֹ מִכַּ֣ף הָאִ֑ישׁ לְהַשְׁמִ֨יד אֹתִ֚י וְאֶת־בְּנִי֙ יַ֔חַד מִֽנַּחֲלַ֖ת אֱלֹהִֽים: |
For the king will hear, to deliver his maidservant from the hand of the man. who comes to kill my son, and destroy us together from the inheritance of God. |

17And your handmaid said, 'Let, I pray, the word of my lord the king be for comfort, for as an angel of God so is my lord the king, to discern the good and the bad; and the Lord your God may be with you'." |

ותאמר שפחתך.
מאחר שיצוה המלך עלי, יהיה דברו למנוחה לבני, כי לא ישוב מדברו הטוב, כי כמלאך ה' אדני המלך, ולא יחזירנו כעס ושנאה מדברו הטוב:

18And the king answered and he said to the woman, "I beg you not to hide from me anything that I shall ask you." And the woman said: "Let my lord the king please speak." |

24And the king said: "Let him turn to his house, but my face let him not see." And Absalom turned to his house, and the king's face he saw not. |

26And when he shaved his head-and it was at every year's end that he shaved it; because the hair was heavy on him, then he would shave it- he weighed the hair of his head at two hundred shekels, after the king's weight. |

27And to Absalom were born three sons and one daughter whose name was Tamar; and she was a woman of beautiful appearance. |

28And Absalom dwelt in Jerusalem two full years; and the king's face he did not see. |

29And Absalom sent to Joab, to send him to the king; and he would not come to him: and he sent again a second time, and he would not come. |

לאוַיָּ֣קָם יוֹאָ֔ב וַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם הַבָּ֑יְתָה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו לָ֣מָּה הִצִּ֧יתוּ עֲבָדֶ֛ךָ אֶת־הַחֶלְקָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־לִ֖י בָּאֵֽשׁ: |
32And Absalom said to Joab, "Behold, I have sent to you, saying: 'Come here,' that I may send you to the king to say: 'Why have I come from Geshur?' it would be better for me were I still there; and now I will see the king's face; and if there be iniquity in me, let him kill me." |

לבוַיֹּ֣אמֶר אַבְשָׁל֣וֹם אֶל־יוֹאָ֡ב הִנֵּ֣ה שָׁלַ֣חְתִּי אֵלֶ֣יךָ | לֵאמֹ֡ר בֹּ֣א הֵ֠נָּה וְאֶשְׁלְחָה֩ אֹתְךָ֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ לֵאמֹ֗ר לָ֚מָּה בָּ֙אתִי֙ מִגְּשׁ֔וּר ט֥וֹב לִ֖י עֹ֣ד אֲנִי־שָׁ֑ם וְעַתָּ֗ה אֶרְאֶה֙ פְּנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְאִם־יֶשׁ־בִּ֥י עָוֹ֖ן וֶהֱמִתָֽנִי: |
let him kill me.. Let the king kill me. |

33And Joab came to the king, and he told him: and he called for Absalom, and he came to the king, and he prostrated himself to him on his face to the ground before the king; and the king kissed Absalom. |
