Rosh Hashanah begins October 2, 2024, at sundown and it concludes at nightfall on October 4, 2024.

When Is Rosh Hashanah in Other Years?

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, falls on the Hebrew calendar dates of 1 and 2 Tishrei. Here are the coinciding secular dates for the upcoming years:

2025: September 22 at sundown - nightfall on September 24
2026: September 11 at sundown - nightfall on September 13
2027: October 1 at sundown - nightfall on October 3

2028: September 20 at sundown - nightfall on September 22

Note: The Jewish calendar date begins at sundown of the night beforehand. Thus all holiday observances begin at sundown on the secular dates listed, with the following day being the first full day of the holiday. Jewish calendar dates conclude at nightfall.

Rosh Hashanah (the first day of the seventh month) is the head of the year, while Nissan (the month in which Passover falls, is the first of the months. See Our Other Head for why this is so. Reply

Do you still try to celebrate Rosh Hashanah on the first visibility of the new moon? Or do you go with more mathematical precision? It looks like the first visibility might not be until the 16th, at least on Starry Night software. :). Just curious. Reply

The moon circles the earth every 29 and 1/2 days. In the time of the temple and the Sanhedrin (Jewish federal court) they based the months based on that. But, to the best of my knowledge, in the 4th century, Hillel, a great sage, knew the Sanhedrin would dissolve, so he made a permanent calender in a cycle of 19 years. Reply

Please see this link where it is clarified that the shofar is only blown in Jerusalem when the Holy Temple stood. This is true only for the 1st day of Rosh Hashanah - on our set calendar, the 2nd day Rosh Hashanah will never coincide with Shabbat, and thus we blow the Shofar at least on one of the days of Rosh Hashanah.

In addition to this year 2020, 2023, 2026, and 2027 the 1st day of Rosh Hashanah will be on Shabbat. Reply

I was wondering if this year's (2020) Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of a "Shmita" year - - that's the end of a seven-year cycle when land is left idle, debts are forgiven, and you "open your heart" to the unfortunate? Thank you. Reply

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year (Rosh- head, Hashanah- the year). Jewish people go to temple to pray for a healthy and prosperous new year and hear the Ram's Horn (shofar) blown to call them to attention to repent for their misdeeds. It is the beginning of the Ten Days of Repentance which ends on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). Reply

For nearly 45 years, I have had such a strong Love as well as Burden for the Jewish People as well as for Israel & Jerusalem. I visited various Holocaust Memorials while stationed in Germany in the Army. One of my dearest friends was a guy named Stanley Goldenberg. We still keep in touch via Facebook. To this day, I still try to eat 97% Kosher and keep the Jewish Sabath, Candle lighting days & times and take advantage of First Fruit giving, Tzedakah, Aliyah in honor of my Jewish friends & God's Chosen People to Live in Peace on "Their Own Land". As a result, I find myself living with such a sense of Peace also. I am totally convinced that going forward, that Jew & Gentile can & will stand together in unity. It brings tears to my eyes to see those such as Nikki Haley standing up to the UN in defiance against their evil plots & plans. Shalom. Terry Reply

My husband was also stationed in Germany with the Army in 1958 for three years. We visited the Holocaust site nearby at Dachau, before it was ever commercialized. Such a sad remembrance. Back then, the people living around that area wanted to put that time out of their minds. Yes, we need to support the Jewish people because God has chosen them, and keeping our eyes on the Middle East will show us Biblical prophecy. I am so happy that we finally have a leader who is willing to stand up to those who want to destroy Israel. Everyday, I pray for our leaders, Israel, and the Peace of Jerusalem. I also pray for those leaders who want to destroy Israel. Hopefully, some of them will wake up, but according to scripture, some of them won't. God Bless. Reply

Hey Bill,

Actually, there are two New Years in Judaism. The new one established in Exodus 12:2 is the new year for months. The months are counted from the first of Nissan.

However, the years are counted from this Rosh Hashanah, which takes place on the first of Tishrei.

100%, kosher for Passover is good for anything as long as it's kosher. Rather, stuff that are not kosher for Passover, you cannot use on Passover. Reply
