Chanukah celebrates the Jews’ battle for G‑d’s Torah to prevail. But the mitzvah which they established to immortalize their triumph—the kindling of the Chanukah menorah—sheds light on the true nature of “Jewish victory.” The Jewish people do not conquer the negative influences of this world by brute force, but through illumination—by brightening the world with the wisdom and guidance of Torah and mitzvos. Each day of Chanukah, an additional candle shines at the doorway of our homes, bringing greater and greater radiance to those inside and out. Every Jew must reflect the Chanukah candles by increasing Torah’s light in his own life and in the lives of those around him, every day. |
