At least five people are reportedly injured after a car slammed into a Long Island building housing a Chanukah Wonderland workshop run by Chabad-Lubavitch of the Five Towns. Many children were in the building, located in the heart of Woodmere, N.Y., at the time of the suspected accident.
According to several accounts, two of the injured are children and sustained critical injures. Citing sources at the scene, the local CBS news affiliate reported that the other three injured victims were suffering from serious injuries. One person was evacuated from the scene by air ambulance.
The incident occurred at around 3 p.m. one eyewitness said, when one car struck another car, sending the second vehicle hurtling through the window of the storefront. One hour later, that car could be seen hanging from the window frame. Unconfirmed reports suggested that an elderly man drove the car that went crashing into the building.
The children were participating in a host of Chanukah activities at the building, which sits on a corner lot.
Rabbi Zalman Wolowik, director of Chabad-Lubavitch of the Five Towns, said that Nassau County investigators were on the scene. He said that the Chabad House will be providing counselors for anyone who needs support.
“Our first priority at this time is to make sure that everyone is taken care of by medical personnel and that all of the children are safe,” said Rabbi Zalman Wolowik, director of Chabad-Lubavitch of the Five Towns. “We are doing whatever we possibly can for the families of these children during this most difficult of times and urge all people of goodwill to keep them in their prayers.”
