The Alaska Jewish Museum, a program of the Chabad-Lubavitch Jewish Center of Alaska that is currently waiting on a permanent space, is spearheading a documentary about a former Alaska Airlines pilot and executive who personally saved many Yeminite Jews in an operation dubbed "Magic Carpet."
Warren Metzger, now 87, took part in the very dangerous operation of airlifting Yemen's Jews to a new life in Israel. The operation, carried out during Israel's first few years as a state, ultimately transported 40,000 to 50,000 Jews to safety following Yemen's increasing hostility to its Jewish citizens.
When the Alaska Jewish Museum is complete, the documentary will feature prominently in its exhibits, designed to educate Alaskans about their state's little-known 6,000-strong Jewish community and its connections to Israel.
