Faced with chronic illness throughout her lifetime, Rivky Berman, who passed away on May 30, inspired thousands of people around the world with her passionate faith in G‑d, her belief in the power of positive thinking to elicit positive change and her yearning desire to help others.
At the conclusion of the shiva period three weeks ago, her family gathered in the Ohel Chabad center in Queens, N.Y.—near the resting place of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory—where they sat down with parchment and ink to begin the writing of “Rivky’s Torah.”
The family invites the public to “join this great hero of Israel in her lifelong [and beyond] mission to plant Torah as a ‘tree of life’ in the hearts and souls of everyone around her, especially those who need it most.”
The completion of the Torah will be held in proximity of her yahrtzeit, and during the year ahead, a number of initiatives related to “Rivky’s Torah” will be launched and made available to the public.
The current goal is to raise the full target of $72,000 in a 72-hour campaign that launched on June 28.
The project was initiated by Rivky’s husband, Rabbi Shmulie Berman, and her parents, Rabbi Yisrael and Vivi Deren. The project is being managed by Rabbi Yossi Deren of Chabad of Greenwich. They point out that all funds raised will be directed solely to the “Rivky’s Torah” project under the direction of Chabad of Connecticut and Western Massachusetts, where her scroll—and her powerful and lasting vision—will continue to nurture the lives of others.
