Who?

It is best for the homeowner to affix the Mezuzah and say the blessings. If that is not possible, any Jew, who understands the details, may affix the Mezuzah on the homeowner’s behalf.

When?

The Mezuzah can be put up at any time of day or night, other than Shabbat or major Jewish holidays when work is prohibited (See the Jewish Holiday Listing).

How?

The Mezuzah should be permanently affixed to the doorpost. To do this, it is best to use nails or screws, but if necessary, you may also use glue or double-sided mounting tape. Regular scotch tape or masking tape, which are temporary adhesives, should not be used.

The Blessing

When putting up Mezuzahs for more than one doorway in a house, only say the blessing once. When reciting the blessing, keep in mind the other doorways and the blessing will include all those Mezuzahs. We refrain from talking, or other interruptions, until all the Mezuzahs are mounted.

Prior to affixing the first Mezuzah, the following should be recited:

בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה ה', אֱ-להֵינוּ מֶלֶךְ הָעולָם, אֲשֶׁר קִדְּשָנוּ בְּמִצְותָיו וְצִוָּנוּ לִקְבֹּעַ מְזוּזָה

Bah-rookh ah-tah ah-doh-noi eh-loh-hay-noo meh-lekh hah-oh-lahm ah-sher ki-deh-shah-noo beh-mitz-voh-tahv veh-tzee-vah-noo lik-boh-ah meh-zoo-zah.


Translation:

Blessed are You, L‑rd our G‑d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to affix a Mezuzah.

Note: No blessing is recited when affixing a Mezuzah on a room that are not Biblically required to have a Mezuzah (See Which Rooms Require a Mezuzah?), such as the following:

Entrances of garages, storage rooms, doorways or archways that have no actual doors, and a room whose width is less than four cubits, but the total area is at least sixteen cubits square. (i.e. 2 by 9.5 cubits or 1.5 by 12.5 cubits).

In these cases, the blessing should be recited whilst first affixing a Mezuzah to a doorway that does require a blessing. The remaining Mezuzahs are placed in the other archways, etc.
