Known simply as “the purple cook book” in Jewish households around the world, the groundbreaking Spice and Spirit: The Complete Kosher Jewish Cookbook is back in print after an eight-month hiatus.

Published by Lubavitch Women’s Cookbook Publications and with more than 200,000 copies sold since it first appeared in 1977, Spice and Spirit gained an early following with an offering of more than 800 recipes spanning different cooking styles, techniques and flavors, set against a pertinent digest of Jewish dietary laws.

“We present the ‘spice’ – a treasurehouse of kosher dishes, against the backdrop of the ‘spirit’ – the rich tapestry of Jewish life,” editors Tzivia Emmer and Tzipora Reitman write in the preface to the revised 1990 edition. “These two elements are inseparably intertwined: the delicious ‘spice’ of kosher food derives its unforgettable flavor from its ‘sprit’ – the occasion for which it was prepared and the people with whom we shared it.”

The announcement of the new printing came just in time for Chanukah, which begins Tuesday night. The cookbook can be purchased from various sites online, including from the Kehot Publication Society, by clicking here.
