| 1On that night, the king's sleep was disturbed, and he ordered to bring the book of the records, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. |

אבַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֔וּא נָֽדְדָ֖ה שְׁנַ֣ת הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַ֠יֹּ֠אמֶר לְהָבִ֞יא אֶת־סֵ֤פֶר הַזִּכְרֹנוֹת֙ דִּבְרֵ֣י הַיָּמִ֔ים וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ נִקְרָאִ֖ים לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ: |
| the king’s sleep was disturbed: It was a miracle. And some say that he took to heart that Esther had invited Haman; perhaps she had set her eyes upon him, and he would assassinate him. |

נָדְדָה שְׁנַת הַמֶּלֶךְ:
נֵס הָיָה. וְיֵשׁ אוֹמְרִים שָׂם אֶת לִבּוֹ עַל שֶׁזִּמְּנָה אֶסְתֵּר אֶת הָמָן שֶׁמָּא נָתְנָה עֵינֶיהָ בּוֹ וְיַהַרְגֵהוּ:
|
| to bring the book of the records: It is customary for kings that when their sleep is disturbed, parables and lectures are recited to them until their sleep is restored. Our Rabbis, however, explained that since he took to heart [the matter of] Haman and Esther, he said [to himself], “It is impossible that none of my friends should know their plan and divulge it to me.” He [thought] again and said [to himself], “Perhaps someone did me a favor, and I did not reward him and they don’t care about me anymore.” Therefore, “he ordered to bring the book of the records.” |

לְהָבִיא אֶת סֵפֶר הַזִּכְרֹנוֹת:
דֶּרֶךְ הַמְּלָכִים, כְּשֶׁשְּׁנָתָן נוֹדֶדֶת, אוֹמְרִים לִפְנֵיהֶם מְשָׁלִים וְשִׂיחוֹת עַד שֶׁשְּׁנָתָם חוֹזֶרֶת עֲלֵיהֶם. וְרַבּוֹתֵינוּ אָמְרוּ: מִתּוֹךְ שֶׁנָּתַן לִבּוֹ עַל הָמָן וְאֶסְתֵּר, אָמַר: "אִי אֶפְשָׁר שֶׁלֹּא יֵדַע אָדָם שֶׁהוּא אוֹהֲבִי עֲצָתָם, וִיגַלֶּה לִי". וְחָזַר וְאָמַר: "שֶׁמָּא עָשָׂה לִי אָדָם טוֹבָה וְלֹא גְמַלְתִּיו, וְאֵין חוֹשְׁשִׁין עוֹד לִי". לְפִיכָךְ, "וַיֹּאמֶר לְהָבִיא אֶת סֵפֶר הַזִּכְרֹנוֹת":

| 2And it was found written that Mordecai had reported about Bigthana and Teresh, two chamberlains of the king, of the guards of the threshold, who had sought to lay a hand on King Ahasuerus. |
|
בוַיִּמָּצֵ֣א כָת֗וּב אֲשֶׁר֩ הִגִּ֨יד מָרְדֳּכַ֜י עַל־בִּגְתָ֣נָא וָתֶ֗רֶשׁ שְׁנֵי֙ סָֽרִיסֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ מִשֹּֽׁמְרֵ֖י הַסַּ֑ף אֲשֶׁ֤ר בִּקְשׁוּ֙ לִשְׁלֹ֣חַ יָ֔ד בַּמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֲחַשְׁוֵרֽוֹשׁ: |
| 3And the king said, "What honor and greatness was done to Mordecai on that account?" And the king's servants who minister before him said, "Nothing was done for him." |

גוַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ מַֽה־נַּֽעֲשָׂ֞ה יְקָ֧ר וּגְדוּלָּ֛ה לְמָרְדֳּכַ֖י עַל־זֶ֑ה וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ נַֽעֲרֵ֤י הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ מְשָׁ֣רְתָ֔יו לֹא־נַֽעֲשָׂ֥ה עִמּ֖וֹ דָּבָֽר: |
| 4And the king said, "Who is in the court?" And Haman had come to the outside court of the king's house, to petition the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him. |
|
דוַיֹּ֥אמֶר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מִ֣י בֶֽחָצֵ֑ר וְהָמָ֣ן בָּ֗א לַֽחֲצַ֤ר בֵּֽית־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַחִ֣יצוֹנָ֔ה לֵאמֹ֣ר לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לִתְלוֹת֙ אֶֽת־מָרְדֳּכַ֔י עַל־הָעֵ֖ץ אֲשֶׁר־הֵכִ֥ין לֽוֹ: |
| 5And the king's servants said to him, "Behold Haman is standing in the court." And the king said, "Let him enter." |
|
הוַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ נַֽעֲרֵ֤י הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ אֵלָ֔יו הִנֵּ֥ה הָמָ֖ן עֹמֵ֣ד בֶּֽחָצֵ֑ר וַיֹּ֥אמֶר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יָבֽוֹא: |
| 6And Haman entered, and the king said to him, "What should be done to a man whom the king wishes to honor?" And Haman said to himself, "Whom would the king wish to honor more than me?" |
|
ווַיָּבוֹא֘ הָמָן֒ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ מַֽה־לַּֽעֲשׂ֕וֹת בָּאִ֕ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ חָפֵ֣ץ בִּֽיקָר֑וֹ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הָמָן֙ בְּלִבּ֔וֹ לְמִ֞י יַחְפֹּ֥ץ הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ לַֽעֲשׂ֥וֹת יְקָ֖ר יוֹתֵ֥ר מִמֶּֽנִּי: |
| 7And Haman said to the King, "A man whom the king wishes to honor |
|
זוַיֹּ֥אמֶר הָמָ֖ן אֶל־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ אִ֕ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ חָפֵ֥ץ בִּֽיקָרֽוֹ: |
| 8Let them bring the royal raiment that the king wore and the horse that the king rode upon, and the royal crown should be placed on his head. |
|
חיָבִ֨יאוּ֙ לְב֣וּשׁ מַלְכ֔וּת אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָֽבַשׁ־בּ֖וֹ הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְס֗וּס אֲשֶׁ֨ר רָכַ֤ב עָלָיו֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַֽאֲשֶׁ֥ר נִתַּ֛ן כֶּ֥תֶר מַלְכ֖וּת בְּרֹאשֽׁוֹ: |
| 9And let the raiment and the horse be delivered into the hand of one of the king's most noble princes and let them dress the man whom the king wishes to honor, and let them parade him on the horse in the city square and announce before him, 'So shall be done to the man whom the king wishes to honor!' " |
|
טוְנָת֨וֹן הַלְּב֜וּשׁ וְהַסּ֗וּס עַל־יַד־אִ֞ישׁ מִָשָׂרֵ֤י הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַֽפַּרְתְּמִ֔ים וְהִלְבִּ֨שׁוּ֙ אֶת־הָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ חָפֵ֣ץ בִּֽיקָר֑וֹ וְהִרְכִּיבֻ֤הוּ עַל־הַסּוּס֙ בִּרְח֣וֹב הָעִ֔יר וְקָֽרְא֣וּ לְפָנָ֔יו כָּ֚כָה יֵֽעָשֶׂ֣ה לָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ חָפֵ֥ץ בִּֽיקָרֽוֹ: |
| And let the raiment and the horse: But he did not mention the crown, for he saw that the king became jealous because he said that they should place the crown on a person’s head. |
|
וְנָתוֹן הַלְּבוּשׁ וְהַסּוּס עַל יַד אִישׁ:
וְאֶת הַכֶּתֶר לֹא הִזְכִּיר, שֶׁרָאָה עֵינוֹ שֶׁל מֶלֶךְ רָעָה עַל שֶׁאָמַר שֶׁיִּתְּנוּ הַכֶּתֶר בְּרֹאשׁ אָדָם:

| 10And the king said to Haman, "Hurry, take the raiment and the horse as you have spoken and do so to Mordecai the Jew, who sits in the king's gate; let nothing fail of all that you have spoken." |
|
יוַיֹּ֨אמֶר הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ לְהָמָ֗ן מַ֠הֵ֠ר קַ֣ח אֶת־הַלְּב֤וּשׁ וְאֶת־הַסּוּס֙ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבַּ֔רְתָּ וַֽעֲשֵׂה־כֵן֙ לְמָרְדֳּכַ֣י הַיְּהוּדִ֔י הַיּוֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּשַׁ֣עַר הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ אַל־תַּפֵּ֣ל דָּבָ֔ר מִכֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּֽרְתָּ: |
| 11And Haman took the raiment and the horse, and he dressed Mordecai and paraded him in the city square and announced before him, "So shall be done to the man whom the king wishes to honor!" |
|
יאוַיִּקַּ֤ח הָמָן֙ אֶת־הַלְּב֣וּשׁ וְאֶת־הַסּ֔וּס וַיַּלְבֵּ֖שׁ אֶֽת־מָרְדֳּכָ֑י וַיַּרְכִּיבֵ֨הוּ֙ בִּרְח֣וֹב הָעִ֔יר וַיִּקְרָ֣א לְפָנָ֔יו כָּ֚כָה יֵֽעָשֶׂ֣ה לָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ חָפֵ֥ץ בִּֽיקָרֽוֹ: |
| 12And Mordecai returned to the king's gate, and Haman rushed home, mourning and with his head covered. |
|
יבוַיָּ֥שָׁב מָרְדֳּכַ֖י אֶל־שַׁ֣עַר הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְהָמָן֙ נִדְחַ֣ף אֶל־בֵּית֔וֹ אָבֵ֖ל וַֽחֲפ֥וּי רֹֽאשׁ: |
| And Mordecai returned: to his sackcloth and to his fasting. |
|
וַיָּשָׁב מָרְדְּכַי:
לְשַׂקּוֹ וּלְתַעֲנִיתוֹ:
|
| mourning and with his head covered: Our Sages explained the matter in Tractate Megillah (ad loc.). |
|
אָבֵל וַחֲפוּי רֹאשׁ:
רַבּוֹתֵינוּ פֵּרְשׁוּ הַדָּבָר בְּמַסֶּכֶת מְגִילָּה:

| 13And Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and to all his friends all that had befallen him, and his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish stock, you will not prevail against him, but you will surely fall before him." |
|
יגוַיְסַפֵּ֨ר הָמָ֜ן לְזֶ֤רֶשׁ אִשְׁתּוֹ֙ וּלְכָל־אֹ֣הֲבָ֔יו אֵ֖ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר קָרָ֑הוּ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֩ לּ֨וֹ חֲכָמָ֜יו וְזֶ֣רֶשׁ אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ אִ֣ם מִזֶּ֣רַע הַיְּהוּדִ֡ים מָרְדֳּכַ֞י אֲשֶׁר֩ הַֽחִלּ֨וֹתָ לִנְפֹּ֤ל לְפָנָיו֙ לֹֽא־תוּכַ֣ל ל֔וֹ כִּֽי־נָפ֥וֹל תִּפּ֖וֹל לְפָנָיו: |
| before whom you have begun to fall, etc.: She said, “This nation has been compared to the stars and to the dust. When they descend, they descend to the dust, and when they ascend, they ascend to the sky and the stars.” |
|
אֲשֶׁר הַחִלּוֹתָ לִנְפֹּל וגו':
אָמְרָה: אֻמָּה זוּ נִמְשְׁלוּ לְכוֹכָבִים וּלְעָפָר. כְּשֶׁהֵם יוֹרְדִים יוֹרְדִים עַד לֶעָפָר, וּכְשֶׁהֵם עוֹלִים עוֹלִים עַד לָרָקִיעַ וְעַד הַכּוֹכָבִים:

| 14While they were still talking to him, the king's chamberlains arrived, and hastened to bring Haman to the banquet that Esther had prepared. |
|
ידעוֹדָם֙ מְדַבְּרִ֣ים עִמּ֔וֹ וְסָֽרִיסֵ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ הִגִּ֑יעוּ וַיַּבְהִ֨לוּ֙ לְהָבִ֣יא אֶת־הָמָ֔ן אֶל־הַמִּשְׁתֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁר־עָֽשְׂתָ֥ה אֶסְתֵּֽר: |
