| 1Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying: |
|
אוַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר: |
| 2"Son of man, prophesy and say; So said the Lord God: Wail 'Ha!' for the day. |
|
בבֶּן־אָדָ֕ם הִנָּבֵא֙ וְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֑ה הֵילִ֖ילוּ הָ֥הּ לַיּֽוֹם: |
| Ha!: Like “Aha!” “Ha!” to the day that is destined to come upon those nations. |
|
הה:
כמו אהה הה ליום העתיד לבא על אותן העכו"ם:
|
| 3For the day is near; yea the day that is near is the Lord's, a cloudy day it will be the time of the nations. |
|
גכִּֽי־קָר֣וֹב י֔וֹם וְקָר֥וֹב י֖וֹם לַֽיהֹוָ֑ה י֣וֹם עָנָ֔ן עֵ֥ת גּוֹיִ֖ם יִֽהְיֶֽה: |
| the time of the nations: The time of the destruction of the nations. |
|

עידן תבר עממיא:
|
| 4And a sword will come upon Egypt, and there will be quaking in Cush when the slain fall in Egypt, and they will take her multitude, and her foundations will be broken down. |
|
דוּבָאָ֥ה חֶ֙רֶב֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם וְהָֽיְתָ֚ה חַלְחָלָה֙ בְּכ֔וּשׁ בִּנְפֹ֥ל חָלָ֖ל בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם וְלָֽקְח֣וּ הֲמוֹנָ֔הּ וְנֶֽהֶרְס֖וּ יְסֹֽדוֹתֶֽיהָ: |
| and there will be quaking in Cush: [Heb. חַלְחָלָה,] expression of trembling. When they hear of Egypt’s downfall, they will fear for their lives: perhaps the king of Babylon will rise up against them. |
|
והיתה חלחלה בכוש:
ל' רעד כשישמעו מפלת מצרים יחרדו לנפשם פן יעלה מלך בבל עליהם:
|
| 5Cush and Put, Lud and all who support her, and Kub and the people of the allied land will fall with them by the sword. |
|
הכּ֣וּשׁ וּפ֚וּט וְלוּד֙ וְכָל־הָעֶ֣רֶב וְכ֔וּב וּבְנֵ֖י אֶ֣רֶץ הַבְּרִ֑ית אִתָּ֖ם בַּחֶ֥רֶב יִפֹּֽלוּ: |
| and all who support her: [Heb. הָעֶרֶב וְכָל.] Jonathan renders: וְכָל סוּמְכָוָתָא, all those who guarantee the security of Egypt, garantie in French, guarantee. |
|
וכל הערב:
ת"י וכל סומכוותא כל העורבים ערובת מצרים גרנסי"אה בלע"ז:
|
| [and the people of] the allied land: Those who made a treaty with Egypt to aid her. |
|
ארץ הברית:
כורתי ברית למצרים לעזור לה:
|
| 6So said the Lord: The supporters of Egypt will fall, and the pride of her power will descend; from Migdol to Syene they will fall in her by the sword, says the Lord God. |
|
וכֹּה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה וְנָֽפְלוּ֙ סֹמְכֵ֣י מִצְרַ֔יִם וְיָרַ֖ד גְּא֣וֹן עֻזָּ֑הּ מִמִּגְדֹּ֣ל סְוֵנֵ֗ה בַּחֶ֙רֶב֙ יִפְּלוּ־בָ֔הּ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יֱהֹוִֽה: |
| 7And they shall be desolate in the midst of desolate lands, and his cities shall be in the midst of ruined cities. |
|
זוְנָשַׁ֕מּוּ בְּת֖וֹךְ אֲרָצ֣וֹת נְשַׁמּ֑וֹת וְעָרָ֕יו בְּתֽוֹךְ־עָרִ֥ים נַֽחֲרָב֖וֹת תִּֽהְיֶֽינָה: |
| 8And they will know that I am the Lord when I have set a fire in Egypt, and all her helpers will be broken. |
|
חוְיָֽדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה בְּתִתִּי־אֵ֣שׁ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם וְנִשְׁבְּר֖וּ כָּל־עֹֽזְרֶֽיהָ: |
| when I have set a fire: My fury, which is like fire. |
|
בתתי אש:
חמתי כאש:
|
| 9On that day, emissaries will come out from before Me with legions to frighten Cush, which was secure, and there shall be a quaking in them like the day of Egypt, for behold it is coming. |
|
טבַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא יֵֽצְא֨וּ מַלְאָכִ֚ים מִלְּפָנַי֙ בַּצִּ֔ים לְהַֽחֲרִ֖יד אֶת־כּ֣וּשׁ בֶּ֑טַח וְהָֽיְתָ֨ה חַלְחָלָ֚ה בָהֶם֙ כְּי֣וֹם מִצְרַ֔יִם כִּ֥י הִנֵּ֖ה בָּאָֽה: |
| emissaries… from before Me: Troops of armies going on My mission in many caravans to frighten Cush, which is dwelling securely. |
|
מלאכים מלפני:
גדודי גייסות הולכים בשליחותי בשיירות רבות להחריד את כוש היושבת בטח:
|
| With legions: [Heb. בַּצִים,] like (Num. 24:24): “And legions (וְצִים) from the place of the Kittites,” and so too did Jonathan render it: with legions. |
|
בצים:
כמו וצים מיד כתים (במדבר כ״ד:כ״ד) וכן תרגמו יונתן בלגיונין:
|
| 10So said the Lord God: I shall make the multitude of Egypt to cease by the hand of Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon. |
|
יכֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֑ה וְהִשְׁבַּתִּי֙ אֶת־הֲמ֣וֹן מִצְרַ֔יִם בְּיַ֖ד נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר מֶלֶךְ־בָּבֶֽל: |
| 11He and his people with him-the strong of the nations-will be brought to destroy the land, and they will draw their swords upon Egypt and fill the land with the slain. |
|
יאה֠וּא וְעַמּ֚וֹ אִתּוֹ֙ עָֽרִיצֵ֣י גוֹיִ֔ם מֽוּבָאִ֖ים לְשַׁחֵ֣ת הָאָ֑רֶץ וְהֵרִ֚יקוּ חַרְבוֹתָם֙ עַל־מִצְרַ֔יִם וּמָֽלְא֥וּ אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ חָלָֽל: |
| 12And I shall make the rivers dry and I shall sell the land into the hands of evil ones, and I shall make the land and its fullness desolate in the hands of strangers; I, the Lord, have spoken. |
|
יבוְנָֽתַתִּ֚י יְאֹרִים֙ חָ֣רָבָ֔ה וּמָֽכַרְתִּ֥י אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ בְּיַד־רָעִ֑ים וַֽהֲשִׁמֹּתִ֞י אֶ֚רֶץ וּמְלֹאָהּ֙ בְּיַד־זָרִ֔ים אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה דִּבַּֽרְתִּי: |
| And I shall make the rivers: the land of the rivers; that is, Egypt. |
|
ונתתי יאורים:
ארץ היאורים היא מצרים:
|
| and I shall sell: as the Targum renders: and I shall deliver. |
|
ומכרתי:
כתרגומו ואימסר:
|
| 13So said the Lord God: I shall destroy pagan deities and cause idols to cease from Nof, and there will no longer be a prince from the land of Egypt, and I shall cast fear into the land of Egypt. |
|
יגכֹּֽה־אָמַ֞ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֗ה וְהַֽאֲבַדְתִּ֨י גִלּוּלִ֜ים וְהִשְׁבַּתִּ֚י אֱלִילִים֙ מִנֹּ֔ף וְנָשִׂ֥יא מֵאֶֽרֶץ־מִצְרַ֖יִם לֹ֣א יִֽהְיֶה־ע֑וֹד וְנָֽתַתִּ֥י יִרְאָ֖ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם: |
| 14And I shall make Pathros desolate, and I shall set a fire in Zoan, and I shall execute punishments in No. |
|
ידוַֽהֲשִׁמֹּתִי֙ אֶת־פַּתְר֔וֹס וְנָתַ֥תִּי אֵ֖שׁ בְּצֹ֑עַן וְעָשִׂ֥יתִי שְׁפָטִ֖ים בְּנֹֽא: |
| and I shall execute punishments in No: [This is] Alexandria. |
|
ועשיתי שפטים בנא:
אלכסנדריא:
|
| 15And I shall spill My fury upon Sin, the strength of Egypt, and I shall cut off the multitude of No. |
|
טווְשָׁפַכְתִּ֣י חֲמָתִ֔י עַל־סִ֖ין מָע֣וֹז מִצְרָ֑יִם וְהִכְרַתִּ֖י אֶת־הֲמ֥וֹן נֹֽא: |
| 16And I shall set a fire in Egypt; Sin will quake and No will be ready to split, and Nof-adversaries will attack her daily. |
|
טזוְנָתַ֚תִּי אֵשׁ֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם ח֚וּל תָּחוּל֙ (כתיב תָּחיּל֙) סִ֔ין וְנֹ֖א תִּֽהְיֶ֣ה לְהִבָּקֵ֑עַ וְנֹ֖ף צָרֵ֥י יוֹמָֽם: |
| to split: Her wall will split. |
|
להבקע:
חומתה תבקע:
|
| adversaries [will attack her] daily: [Heb. צָרֵי יוֹמָם, lit. adversaries of days.] Adversaries will come upon her every day. |
|
צרי יומם:
צרים יבאו עליה יום יום:
|
| 17The youths of Aven and Pi-beseth will fall by the sword, and they will go into captivity. |
|
יזבַּח֥וּרֵי אָ֛וֶן וּפִי־בֶ֖סֶת בַּחֶ֣רֶב יִפֹּ֑לוּ וְהֵ֖נָּה בַּשְּׁבִ֥י תֵלַֽכְנָה: |
| and they will go into captivity: both of them, the provinces of Aven and Pi beseth. |
|
והנה בשבי תלכנה:
שתיהן המדינות און ופיבסת:
|
| 18And in Tehaphnehes the day will withdraw itself when I break there the bars of Egypt, and the pride of her strength will be ended in her: as for her, a cloud will cover her, and her daughters will go into captivity. |
|
יחוּבִתְחַפְנְחֵס֙ חָשַׂ֣ךְ הַיּ֔וֹם בְּשִׁבְרִי־שָׁם֙ אֶת־מֹט֣וֹת מִצְרַ֔יִם וְנִשְׁבַּת־בָּ֖הּ גְּא֣וֹן עֻזָּ֑הּ הִיא עָנָ֣ן יְכַסֶּ֔נָּה וּבְנוֹתֶ֖יהָ בַּשְּׁבִ֥י תֵלַֽכְנָה: |
| the day will withdraw itself: [Heb. חָשָּׁך הַיוֹם,] the light will be withheld |
|
חשך היום:
ימנע האור:
|
| a cloud will cover her: Trouble will come upon her and cover her, and it will become dark [for her] like a day covered with clouds. |
|
ענן יכסנה:
צרה תבוא עליה ותכסנה ותחשך כיום כסוי הענן:
|
|
|
ובנותיה:
וכפרנהא:
|
| 19And I shall execute judgments upon Egypt, and they will know that I am the Lord." |
|
יטוְעָשִׂ֥יתִי שְׁפָטִ֖ים בְּמִצְרָ֑יִם וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה: |
| 20Now it came about in the eleventh year, in the first [month], on the seventh of the month, that the word of the Lord came to me, saying: |
|
כוַיְהִ֗י בְּאַחַ֚ת עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה בָּֽרִאשׁ֖וֹן בְּשִׁבְעָ֣ה לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הָיָ֥ה דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר: |
| 21"Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and behold, it was not bound to promote healing, to place a bandage [upon it], binding it to strengthen it to grasp a sword. |
|
כאבֶּן־אָדָ֕ם אֶת־זְר֛וֹעַ פַּרְעֹ֥ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֖יִם שָׁבָ֑רְתִּי וְהִנֵּ֣ה לֹֽא־חֻ֠בְּשָׁה לָתֵ֨ת רְפֻא֜וֹת לָשׂ֥וּם חִתּ֛וּל לְחָבְשָׁ֥הּ לְחָזְקָ֖הּ לִתְפֹּ֥שׂ בֶּחָֽרֶב: |
| I have broken the arm of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt: already another time, for I placed his army in the hands of Nebuchadnezzar in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, as it is said in the Book of Jeremiah (46:2): “Concerning Egypt, concerning the army of Pharaoh-neco, the king of Egypt, which was on the Euphrates in Carcemish, whom King Nebuchadnezzar smote, etc.” |
|
את זרוע פרעה מלך מצרים שברתי:
כבר פעם אחרת שנתתי חילו ביד נבוכדנצר בשנה הרביעית ליהויקים כמה שנאמר בספר (ירמיהו מ״ו:ב׳) למצרים על חיל פרעה נכה מלך מצרים אשר היה בכרכמיש על נהר פרת אשר הכה נבוכדנצר וגומר:

| and behold, it was not bound: from that day on, as it is said at the end of the Book of Kings (II 24:7): “And the king of Egypt no longer went out of his land, for the king of Babylonia had taken from the river of Egypt,” and with this expression Jeremiah, too, prophesied concerning that blow, using the language “it has no cure,” as it is said (Jer. 46:11): “Go up to Gilead and take balm, O virgin daughter of Egypt; in vain you have increased medicines, you have no cure.” |

והנה לא חובשה:
מאותו היום והלאה כמה שנאמ' בספר (מלכים ב כ״ד:ז׳) בסופו ולא יסף עוד מלך מצרים לצאת מארצו כי לקח מלך בבל מנהר פרת עד נחל מצרים ובסגנון זה נתנבא ירמי' גם הוא על אותה המכה בלשון רפואה אין לה שנאמר (ירמיהו מ״ו:י״א) עלי גלעד וקחי צרי בתולת בת מצרים לשוא הרבית רפואות תעלה אין לך:

| it was not bound: חֻבָּשָּׁה is an expression of binding, for they bind the broken bone. |
|
לא חובשה:
ל' קשירה שקושרין עצם הנשבר:

| to place a bandage [Heb.: חִתּוּל,] [a dressing] made of cloth and plaster, like (above 16:44): “nor swaddled at all (והֳחְתֵּל לֹא חֻתָּלְתְּ).” |
|
לשום חתול:
מעשה בגדים ורטייה כמו (לעיל טז) והחתל לא חתלת:

| to grasp a sword: that he should have more strength to wage war. |
|
לתפוש בחרב:
שיהא לו עוד כח להלחם:
|
| 22Therefore, so said the Lord God: Behold I am against Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and I shall break his arms, the strong one and the broken one, and I shall cause the sword to fall from his hand. |
|
כבלָכֵ֞ן כֹּה־אָמַ֣ר | אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֗ה הִֽנְנִי֙ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֣ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֔יִם וְשָֽׁבַרְתִּי֙ אֶת־זְרֹ֣עֹתָ֔יו אֶת־הַֽחֲזָקָ֖ה וְאֶת־הַנִּשְׁבָּ֑רֶת וְהִפַּלְתִּ֥י אֶת־הַחֶ֖רֶב מִיָּדֽוֹ: |
| and I shall break his arms: I shall break the second [arm], and both of them will be broken; i.e., the king of Babylon took from one side; I shall yet give him the entire kingdom. |
|
ושברתי את זרועותיו:
אשבור את השנית ותהיינה שתיהן שבורות כלומר כבר לקח מלך בבל מצד הא' עוד אמסור לו יתר המלכות כולו:

| 23And I shall scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and I shall disperse them throughout the lands. |
|
כגוַֽהֲפִֽצוֹתִ֥י אֶת־מִצְרַ֖יִם בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם וְזֵֽרִיתִ֖ים בָּֽאֲרָצֽוֹת: |
| 24And I shall strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and I shall give My sword into his hand, and I shall break the arms of Pharaoh, and he will groan the groans of the slain before him. |
|
כדוְחִזַּקְתִּ֗י אֶת־זְרֹעוֹת֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל וְנָֽתַתִּ֥י אֶת־חַרְבִּ֖י בְּיָד֑וֹ וְשָֽׁבַרְתִּי֙ אֶת־זְרֹע֣וֹת פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְנָאַ֛ק נַֽאֲק֥וֹת חָלָ֖ל לְפָנָֽיו: |
| And I shall strengthen: [Heb. וְחִזַּקְתִּי,] an expression of strength. |
|
וחזקתי:

| 25And I shall grasp the arms of the king of Babylon, and the arms of Pharaoh will fall, and they will know that I am the Lord when I give My sword into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will stretch it out over the land of Egypt. |
|
כהוְהַֽחֲזַקְתִּ֗י אֶת־זְרֹעוֹת֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל וּזְרֹע֥וֹת פַּרְעֹ֖ה תִּפֹּ֑לְנָה וְֽיָֽדְע֞וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֗ה בְּתִתִּ֚י חַרְבִּי֙ בְּיַ֣ד מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֔ל וְנָטָ֥ה אוֹתָ֖הּ אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם: |
| And I shall grasp: [Heb. וְהֲחֲזַּקְתִּי,] an expression of grasping, that one grasps his hand to support it so that it should not fall. The end of it proves it: “and the arms of Pharaoh will fall,” because He does not hold them. |
|
והחזקתי:
ל' אחיזה שאוחז בידו לסמיכה שלא תפול וסופו יוכיח וזרועות פרעה תפולנה שאינו אוחז בהן:

| 26And I shall scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and I shall disperse them among the lands, and they will know that I am the Lord." |
|
כווַֽהֲפִֽצוֹתִ֚י אֶת־מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ בַּגּוֹיִ֔ם וְזֵֽרִיתִ֥י אוֹתָ֖ם בָּֽאֲרָצ֑וֹת וְיָֽדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה: |
