| 1The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord when King Zedekiah sent him Pashhur son of Milchiah and Zephaniah son of Maasiah the priest, saying: |

אהַדָּבָ֛ר אֲשֶׁר־הָיָ֥ה אֶל־יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהֹוָ֑ה בִּשְׁלֹ֨חַ אֵלָ֜יו הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֗הוּ אֶת־פַּשְׁחוּר֙ בֶּן־מַלְכִּיָּ֔ה וְאֶת־צְפַנְיָ֧ה בֶן־מַֽעֲשֵׂיָ֛ה הַכֹּהֵ֖ן לֵאמֹֽר: |
| 2Please petition the Lord for us, for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon is waging war against us; perhaps the Lord will do to us like all His wonders, and he will withdraw from us." |

בדְּרָשׁ־נָ֚א בַֽעֲדֵ֙נוּ֙ אֶת־יְהֹוָ֔ה כִּ֛י נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֥ר מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֖ל נִלְחָ֣ם עָלֵ֑ינוּ אוּלַי֩ יַֽעֲשֶׂ֨ה יְהֹוָ֚ה אוֹתָ֙נוּ֙ כְּכָל־נִפְלְאֹתָ֔יו וְיַֽעֲלֶ֖ה מֵֽעָלֵֽינוּ: |
| 3And Jeremiah said to them, "So shall you say to Zedekiah, |
|
גוַיֹּ֥אמֶר יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם כֹּ֥ה תֹֽאמְרֻ֖ן אֶל־צִדְקִיָּֽהוּ: |
| 4So said the Lord God of Israel; Behold I turn back the weapons of war that are in your hand[s], with which you are waging war against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who are besieging you from outside the wall, and I will gather them into this city. |
|
דכֹּֽה־אָמַ֨ר יְהֹוָ֜ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הִנְנִ֣י מֵסֵב֘ אֶת־כְּלֵ֣י הַמִּלְחָמָה֘ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיֶדְכֶם֒ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַתֶּ֜ם נִלְחָמִ֣ים בָּ֗ם אֶת־מֶ֚לֶךְ בָּבֶל֙ וְאֶת־הַכַּשְׂדִּ֔ים הַצָּרִ֣ים עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם מִח֖וּץ לַֽחוֹמָ֑ה וְאָֽסַפְתִּ֣י אוֹתָ֔ם אֶל־תּ֖וֹךְ הָעִ֥יר הַזֹּֽאת: |
| Behold I turn back the weapons of war: There are some among you who know how to adjure the heavenly princes in charge of retribution, that each one save them from the evil he is in charge of, and you rely on that. Behold, I will transfer one’s authority to another one, and you will not know whom to adjure. |
|
הנני מסב את כלי המלחמה:
יש בכם היודעי' להשביע את השרים של מעלה הממונים על הפורעניות להציל איש איש מן הרעה שהוא ממונה עליה ובכך אתם בוטחי' הנני מיסב את השררה של זה לזה ולא תדעו על מי תשביעו:

| and I will gather them: i.e., the weapons of war, into this city, that I will destroy you with pestilence through the angel of death, who is one of the heavenly princes. And in this manner it is explained in the chapter (v. 6): “with a great pestilence they shall die.” |
|
ואספתי אותם:
כלי מלחמה אל תוך העיר הזאת שאשחית אתכם בדבר ע"י מלאך המות שהוא מן השרים העליונים וכן מפורש בענין בדבר גדול ימותו:

| 5And I will wage war with you with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, and with anger and with fury and with great wrath. |
|
הוְנִלְחַמְתִּ֚י אֲנִי֙ אִתְּכֶ֔ם בְּיָ֥ד נְטוּיָ֖ה וּבִזְר֣וֹעַ חֲזָקָ֑ה וּבְאַ֥ף וּבְחֵמָ֖ה וּבְקֶ֥צֶף גָּדֽוֹל: |
| 6And I will smite the inhabitants of this city and the people and the beasts; with a great pestilence they shall die. |
|
ווְהִכֵּיתִ֗י אֶת־יֽוֹשְׁבֵי֙ הָעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את וְאֶת־הָֽאָדָ֖ם וְאֶת־הַבְּהֵמָ֑ה בְּדֶ֥בֶר גָּד֖וֹל יָמֻֽתוּ: |
| 7And afterwards, says the Lord, I will deliver Zedekiah, the king of Judah and his servants and the people and those remaining in this city, from the pestilence, from the sword, and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar, the king of Babylon and into the hand of your enemies and into the hand of those who seek your lives, and he shall strike them by the edge of the sword; he will not spare them, neither will he pity nor show compassion. |

זוְאַֽחֲרֵי־כֵ֣ן נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֡ה אֶתֵּ֣ן אֶת־צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָ֣ה | וְאֶת־עֲבָדָ֣יו | וְאֶת־הָעָ֡ם וְאֶת־הַנִּשְׁאָרִים֩ בָּעִ֨יר הַזֹּ֜את מִן־הַדֶּ֣בֶר | מִן־הַחֶ֣רֶב וּמִן־הָֽרָעָ֗ב בְּיַד֙ נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֣ר מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֔ל וּבְיַד֙ אֹֽיְבֵיהֶ֔ם וּבְיַ֖ד מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י נַפְשָׁ֑ם וְהִכָּ֣ם לְפִי־חֶ֔רֶב לֹֽא־יָח֣וּס עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וְלֹ֥א יַחְמֹ֖ל וְלֹ֥א יְרַחֵֽם: |
| 8And to this people you shall say; So said the Lord: Behold I place before you the way of life and the way of death. |
|
חוְאֶל־הָעָ֚ם הַזֶּה֙ תֹּאמַ֔ר כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֑ה הִנְנִ֚י נֹתֵן֙ לִפְנֵיכֶ֔ם אֶת־דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַחַיִּ֖ים וְאֶת־דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַמָּֽוֶת: |
| 9Whoever abides in this city shall die by the sword or by famine or by pestilence, but whoever goes forth and defects to the Chaldeans who are besieging you, shall live, and he will have his life as a prey. |
|
טהַיּשֵׁב֙ בָּעִ֣יר הַזֹּ֔את יָמ֕וּת בַּחֶ֖רֶב וּבָֽרָעָ֣ב וּבַדָּ֑בֶר וְהַיּוֹצֵא֩ וְנָפַ֨ל עַל־הַכַּשְׂדִּ֜ים הַצָּרִ֚ים עֲלֵיכֶם֙ וְחָיָ֔ה (כתיב יְחָיָ֔ה) וְהָֽיְתָה־לּ֥וֹ נַפְשׁ֖וֹ לְשָׁלָֽל: |
| and he will have his life as a prey: As a man who plunders booty, and he seizes and goes away, so will his life be plundered from death by the slayers. |
|
והיתה לו נפשו לשלל:
כאדם השולל שלל וחוטפו והולך לו כן תהיה לי נפשו שלולה מן המיתה מן ההורגים:

| 10For I have set My anger against this city for evil and not for good, says the Lord; it shall be delivered into the hand[s] of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire. |
|
יכִּ֣י שַׂ֣מְתִּי פָנַ֠י בָּעִ֨יר הַזֹּ֧את לְרָעָ֛ה וְלֹ֥א לְטוֹבָ֖ה נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה בְּיַד־מֶ֚לֶךְ בָּבֶל֙ תִּנָּתֵ֔ן וּשְׂרָפָ֖הּ בָּאֵֽשׁ: |
| My anger: as the Targum, רוּגְזִי My anger. |

| 11And to the house of the king of Judah: Hear the word of the Lord. |
|
יאוּלְבֵית֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה שִׁמְע֖וּ דְּבַר־יְהֹוָֽה: |
| 12O house of David, so said the Lord: Execute justice in the morning and rescue the robbed from the hand of the robber, lest My fury go forth like fire, and it burn with no one to extinguish [it], because of the evil of your deeds. |
|
יבבֵּ֣ית דָּוִ֗ד כֹּה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה דִּ֚ינוּ לַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ מִשְׁפָּ֔ט וְהַצִּ֥ילוּ גָז֖וּל מִיַּ֣ד עוֹשֵׁ֑ק פֶּן־תֵּצֵ֨א כָאֵ֜שׁ חֲמָתִ֗י וּבָֽעֲרָה֙ וְאֵ֣ין מְכַבֶּ֔ה מִפְּנֵ֖י רֹ֥עַ מַעַלְלֵיכֶֽם (כתיב מַעַלְלֵיהֶֽם) : |
| from the hand of the robber: Its accent is below for it is not a noun but a noun denoting the robber who robs others. |
|
מיד עושק:
טעמו למטה שאינו שם דבר אלא שם הגזלן העושק את אחרים:
|
| with no one to extinguish [it]: that no one of you will escape as a survivor. |
|
ואין מכבה:
שלא ימלט לכם שריד:
|
| 13Behold I am against you, O dweller of the valley, rock of the plain, says the Lord, those who say, "Who will encamp upon us, and who will come into our dwellings?" |
|
יגהִנְנִ֨י אֵלַ֜יִךְ יֹֽשֶׁ֧בֶת הָעֵ֛מֶק צ֥וּר הַמִּישֹׁ֖ר נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה הָאֹֽמְרִים֙ מִֽי־יֵחַ֣ת עָלֵ֔ינוּ וּמִ֥י יָב֖וֹא בִּמְעֽוֹנוֹתֵֽינוּ: |
| O dweller of the valley: Jerusalem is in the midst of a valley. Another explanation. That the Holy One, blessed be He, devised a deep plot against you to destroy you. |
|
יושבת העמק:
ירושלים היא בתוך עמק, ד"א שהעמיק הקב"ה עצה עליך להחריבך:

| rock of the plain: Mountain, entirely surrounded by plain. |
|
צור המישור הר שכל:
סביביו מישור:

| Who will encamp upon us: who will encamp upon us. Comp. (II Kings 6:9) “For there the Arameans are encamped (נְחִתִּים).” |
|
מי יחת עלינו:
מי יחנה עלינו כמו כי שם ארם נחיתים (מלכים ב ו׳:ט׳):
|
| 14And I will visit upon you according to the fruit of your deeds, says the Lord, and I will ignite a fire in her forest, and it will consume all her surroundings. |
|
ידוּפָֽקַדְתִּ֧י עֲלֵיכֶ֛ם כִּפְרִ֥י מַעַלְלֵיכֶ֖ם נְאֻם־יְהֹוָ֑ה וְהִצַּ֚תִּי אֵשׁ֙ בְּיַעְרָ֔הּ וְאָֽכְלָ֖ה כָּל־סְבִיבֶֽיהָ: |
