| 1And the disciples of the prophets said to Elisha, "Behold now the place where we are sitting before you is too narrow for us. |
|
אוַיֹּאמְר֥וּ בְנֵֽי־הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים אֶל־אֱלִישָׁ֑ע הִנֵּֽה־נָ֣א הַמָּק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֲנַ֜חְנוּ ישְׁבִ֥ים שָׁ֛ם לְפָנֶ֖יךָ צַ֥ר מִמֶּֽנּוּ: |
| And the disciples of the prophets said He continues to enumerate the miracles that were performed for him (sic). Our Sages deduced from here that Gehazi would reject the pupils from before him, and when he was banished, many pupils came, and the place became too cramped for them. |
|
וַיֹּאמְרוּ בְנֵי הַנְּבִיאִים
נִסִּים שֶׁנַּעֲשׂוּ לוֹ מְסַדֵּר וְהוֹלֵךְ. רַבּוֹתֵינוּ אָמְרוּ: מִכָּאן שֶׁהָיָה גֵּיחֲזִי דּוֹחֶה הַתַּלְמִידִים מִלְּפָנָיו, וּכְשֶׁנִּטְרַד בָּאוּ תַּלְמִידִים רַבִּים, וְנִדְחַק הַמָּקוֹם מֵהֶם.
|
| 2Let us go now to the Jordan and take from there each man one beam, and let us make a place for ourselves to sit there." And he said, "Go." |
|
בנֵֽלְכָה־נָּ֣א עַד־הַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן וְנִקְחָ֚ה מִשָּׁם֙ אִישׁ קוֹרָ֣ה אֶחָ֔ת וְנַעֲשֶׂה־לָּ֥נוּ שָׁ֛ם מָק֖וֹם לָשֶׁ֣בֶת שָׁ֑ם וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לֵֽכוּ: |
| 3And one said, "Please be willing to go with your servants." And he said, "I will go." |
|
גוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הָֽאֶחָ֔ד ה֥וֹאֶל נָ֖א וְלֵ֣ךְ אֶת־עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲנִ֥י אֵלֵֽךְ: |

הוֹאֶל
הִתְרַצֶּה.
|
| 4And he went with them, and they came to the Jordan, and cut down the trees. |
|
דוַיֵּ֖לֶךְ אִתָּ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔נָה וַֽיִּגְזְר֖וּ הָעֵצִֽים: |
| 5One was casting down the beam, and with the axe blade it fell into the water. He cried out and said, "Alas, master, it is borrowed!" |
|
הוַיְהִ֚י הָֽאֶחָד֙ מַפִּ֣יל הַקּוֹרָ֔ה וְאֶת־הַבַּרְזֶ֖ל נָפַ֣ל אֶל־הַמָּ֑יִם וַיִּצְעַ֥ק וַיֹּ֛אמֶר אֲהָ֥הּ אֲדֹנִ֖י וְה֥וּא שָׁאֽוּל: |
|
|
וְאֶת הַבַּרְזֶל
הַנְּסֹרֶת.
|
| it is borrowed I borrowed it, and I have not the wherewithal to pay. |
|
וְהוּא שָׁאוּל
שְׁאִלְתִּיו, וְאֵין לִי מִמַּה לְשַׁלֵּם.
|
| 6And the man of God said to him, "Where did it fall?" And he showed him the spot, and he cut off a piece of wood and threw it there, and the axe blade floated. |
|
ווַיֹּ֥אמֶר אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים אָ֣נָה נָפָ֑ל וַיַּרְאֵ֙הוּ֙ אֶת־הַמָּק֔וֹם וַיִּקְצָב־עֵץ֙ וַיַּשְׁלֶךְ־שָׁ֔מָּה וַיָּ֖צֶף הַבַּרְזֶֽל: |
| floated floated on the water. |
|
וַיָּצֶף
צָף עַל הַמַּיִם.
|
| 7And he said, "Pick it up for yourself." And he stretched out his hand and took it. |
|
זוַיֹּ֖אמֶר הָ֣רֶם לָ֑ךְ וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח יָד֖וֹ וַיִּקָּחֵֽהוּ: |
| 8And the king of Aram was waging war with Israel; and he held council with his servants, saying, "In a hidden, secret place I will encamp." |
|
חוּמֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֔ם הָיָ֥ה נִלְחָ֖ם בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּוָּעַץ֙ אֶל־עֲבָדָ֣יו לֵאמֹ֗ר אֶל־מְק֛וֹם פְּלֹנִ֥י אַלְמֹנִ֖י תַּחֲנֹתִֽי: |
| hidden, secret Jonathan [renders]: covered and hidden. פְּלֹנִי is an expression of (Deut. 17:8) “If it be concealed” (יִפָּלֵא). |
|
פְּלֹנִי אַלְמֹנִי
כָּסֵי וְטָמִיר, פְּלוֹנִי, לְשׁוֹן: כִּי יִפָּלֵא 'יִתְכַּסֵּי'.
|
| secret without a name, for he did not want it to be revealed. |
|
אַלְמוֹנִי
מִבְּלִי שֵׁם, שֶׁלֹּא הָיָה רוֹצֶה לְהִתְגַּלּוֹת.
|
| I will encamp There I will encamp and ambush the king of Israel or his bands who pass to plunder in my land through that place. |
|
תַּחֲנֹתִי
שָׁם אֶחֱנֶה, וְאֶאֱרֹב אֶת מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל אוֹ אֶת גְּדוּדָיו הָעוֹבְרִים לִשְׁלֹל בְּאַרְצִי דֶּרֶךְ אוֹתוֹ הַמָּקוֹם.
|
| 9And the man of God sent to the king of Israel, saying, "Beware of passing this place, for there the Arameans are encamped." |
|
טוַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים אֶל־מֶ֚לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִשָּׁ֕מֶר מֵעֲבֹ֖ר הַמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה כִּֽי־שָׁ֖ם אֲרָ֥ם נְחִתִּֽים: |
| of passing this place [i.e.,] from going there. |
|
מֵעֲבֹר הַמָּקוֹם הַזֶּה
מִלֶּכֶת שָׁם.
|

|
| 10And the king of Israel sent to the place concerning which the man of God had told him and cautioned him, and he took precautions there, not once and not twice. |
|
יוַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אֶֽל־הַמָּק֞וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָֽמַר־ל֧וֹ אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים וְהִזְהִיר֖וֹ (כתיב וְהִזְהִירֹ֖ה) וְנִשְׁמַ֣ר שָׁ֑ם לֹ֥א אַחַ֖ת וְלֹ֥א שְׁתָּֽיִם: |
| And the king of Israel sent He would send and see whether it was true. |
|
וַיִּשְׁלַח מֶלֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל
הָיָה שׁוֹלֵחַ וְרוֹאֶה אִם אֱמֶת הוּא.
|
| and cautioned him concerning which the man of God had cautioned him from passing. |
|
וְהִזְהִירֹה
שֶׁהִזְהִיר אִישׁ הָאֱלֹהִים מֵעֲבֹר שָׁם.
|
| not once and not twice did he do so for him, but many times. |
|
לֹא אַחַת וְלֹא שְׁתָּיִם
עָשָׂה לוֹ כָּךְ, כִּי אִם פְּעָמִים רַבּוֹת.
|
| 11And the king of Aram was greatly disturbed about this matter, and he summoned his servants and said to them, "Will you not tell me who of ours [reveals my secrets] to the king of Israel?" |
|
יאוַיִּסָּעֵר֙ לֵ֣ב מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲרָ֔ם עַל־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַיִּקְרָ֚א אֶל־עֲבָדָיו֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם הֲלוֹא֙ תַּגִּ֣ידוּ לִ֔י מִ֥י מִשֶּׁלָּ֖נוּ אֶל־מֶ֥לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל: |
| about this matter who was revealing his secret. |
|
עַל הַדָּבָר הַזֶּה
מִי הוּא מְגַלֶּה סוֹדוֹ.
|
| 12And one of his servants said, "No, my master, the King, but Elisha the prophet who is in Israel tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom." |
|
יבוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אַחַ֣ד מֵֽעֲבָדָ֔יו ל֖וֹא אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ כִּֽי־אֱלִישָׁ֚ע הַנָּבִיא֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל יַגִּיד֙ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־הַ֨דְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר תְּדַבֵּ֖ר בַּחֲדַ֥ר מִשְׁכָּבֶֽךָ: |
| 13And he said, "Go and see where he is, and I will send and take him." And it was told to him saying, "Behold he is in Dothan." |
|
יגוַיֹּ֗אמֶר לְכ֚וּ וּרְאוּ֙ אֵיכֹ֣ה ה֔וּא וְאֶשְׁלַ֖ח וְאֶקָּחֵ֑הוּ וַיֻּגַּד־ל֥וֹ לֵאמֹ֖ר הִנֵּ֥ה בְדֹתָֽן: |
| where he is where he is. |
|
אֵיכֹה
הֵיכָן הוּא.
|
| 14And he sent there horses and chariots and a great army; and they came at night and surrounded the city. |
|
ידוַיִּשְׁלַח־שָׁ֛מָּה סוּסִ֥ים וְרֶ֖כֶב וְחַ֣יִל כָּבֵ֑ד וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ לַ֔יְלָה וַיַּקִּ֖פוּ עַל־הָעִֽיר: |
| 15And the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, and behold an army with horses and chariots was surrounding the city. And his attendant said to him, "Alas, my master! What shall we do?" |
|
טווַ֠יַּשְׁכֵּם מְשָׁרֵ֨ת אִ֥ישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִים֘ לָקוּם֒ וַיֵּצֵ֕א וְהִנֵּה־חַ֛יִל סוֹבֵ֥ב אֶת־הָעִ֖יר וְס֣וּס וָרָ֑כֶב וַיֹּ֨אמֶר נַעֲר֥וֹ אֵלָ֛יו אֲהָ֥הּ אֲדֹנִ֖י אֵיכָ֥ה נַֽעֲשֶֹֽה: |
| 16And he said, "Have no fear, for those who are with us are more numerous than those who are with them." |
|
טזוַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַל־תִּירָ֑א כִּ֚י רַבִּים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתָּ֔נוּ מֵאֲשֶׁ֖ר אוֹתָֽם: |
| who are with us [i.e.,] who are on our side (helping us). |
|
אֲשֶׁר אִתָּנוּ
בְּעֶזְרָתֵנוּ.
|
| 17And Elisha prayed and said, "O Lord, please open his eyes and let him see." And the Lord opened the lad's eyes and he saw, and behold the mountain was full of fiery horses and chariots around Elisha. |
|
יזוַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֚ל אֱלִישָׁע֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר יְהֹוָ֕ה פְּקַח־נָ֥א אֶת־עֵינָ֖יו וְיִרְאֶ֑ה וַיִּפְקַ֚ח יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת־עֵינֵ֣י הַנַּ֔עַר וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֨ה הָהָ֜ר מָלֵ֨א סוּסִ֥ים וְרֶ֛כֶב אֵ֖שׁ סְבִיבֹ֥ת אֱלִישָֽׁע: |
| 18And they came down to him, and Elisha prayed to the Lord and said, "Please strike this people with blindness; and He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. |
|
יחוַיֵּרְדוּ֘ אֵלָיו֒ וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֨ל אֱלִישָׁ֚ע אֶל־יְהֹוָה֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר הַךְ־נָ֥א אֶת־הַגּוֹי־הַזֶּ֖ה בַּסַּנְוֵרִ֑ים וַיַּכֵּ֥ם בַּסַּנְוֵרִ֖ים כִּדְבַ֥ר אֱלִישָֽׁע: |
| and said, Please strike… On the curse he did not mention the Name [of God,] but on opening the eyes he mentioned the Name [of God] on both of them, concerning [opening] the attendant’s [eyes], and concerning [opening the eyes] of the troop. |
|
וַיֹּאמַר הַךְ נָא וְגוֹ'
עַל הַקְּלָלָה לֹא הִזְכִּיר אֶת הַשֵּׁם, אֲבָל עַל הַפְּקִיחָה הִזְכִּיר אֶת הַשֵּׁם עַל שְׁתֵּיהֶן, עַל שֶל נַעַר וְעַל שֶל גְּדוּד.
|
| with blindness a sickness of confusion; one sees, yet does not know what he sees. |
|
סַנְוֵרִים
חֹלִי שֶׁל שִׁמָּמוֹן, רוֹאֶה וְאֵינוֹ יוֹדֵעַ מַה הוּא רוֹאֶה.
|
| 19And Elisha said to them, "Neither is this the way nor is this the city. Follow me and I will lead you to the man you seek." And he led them to Samaria. |
|
יטוַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֜ם אֱלִישָׁ֗ע לֹ֣א זֶ֣ה הַדֶּרֶךְ֘ וְלֹ֣א זֹ֣ה הָעִיר֒ לְכ֣וּ אַחֲרַ֔י וְאוֹלִ֣יכָה אֶתְכֶ֔ם אֶל־הָאִ֖ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תְּבַקֵּשׁ֑וּן וַיֹּ֥לֶךְ אוֹתָ֖ם שֹׁמְרֽוֹנָה: |
| nor is this the city wherein the prophet is [found]. Now he told them the truth since he had already left it. |
|
וְלֹא זֹה הָעִיר
שֶׁהַנָּבִיא בְּתוֹכָהּ, וֶאֱמֶת אָמַר לָהֶם, שֶׁכְּבָר יָצָא מִמֶּנָּה.
|
| 20And it was when they came to Samaria, that Elisha said, "O Lord, open these people's eyes that they may see." And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw, and behold they were in Samaria. |
|
כוַיְהִי֘ כְּבֹאָ֣ם שֹׁמְרוֹן֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֱלִישָׁ֔ע יְהֹוָ֕ה פְּקַ֥ח אֶת־עֵינֵֽי־אֵ֖לֶּה וַיִרְא֑וּ וַיִּפְקַ֚ח יְהֹוָה֙ אֶת־עֵ֣ינֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּרְא֕וּ וְהִנֵּ֖ה בְּת֥וֹךְ שֹׁמְרֽוֹן: |
| 21Now the king of Israel said to Elisha when he saw them, "Shall I slay them, my lord?" |
|
כאוַיֹּ֚אמֶר מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־אֱלִישָׁ֔ע כִּרְאֹת֖וֹ אוֹתָ֑ם הַאַכֶּ֥ה אַכֶּ֖ה אָבִֽי: |
| 22And he said, "You shall not slay. Do you slay those you have captured with your sword and with your bow? Set food and water for them and let them eat and drink and go to their masters. |
|
כבוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א תַכֶּ֔ה הַאֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁבִ֛יתָ בְּחַרְבְּךָ֥ וּֽבְקַשְׁתְּךָ֖ אַתָּ֣ה מַכֶּ֑ה שִׂים֩ לֶ֨חֶם וָמַ֜יִם לִפְנֵיהֶ֗ם וְיֹֽאכְלוּ֙ וְיִשְׁתּ֔וּ וְיֵלְכ֖וּ אֶל־אֲדֹנֵיהֶֽם: |
| Do you slay those you have captured with your sword and with your bow Is it your custom to slay one whom you bring into captivity (and destroy them)? |
|
הַאֲשֶׁר שָׁבִיתָ וְגוֹ'
וְכִי דַּרְכְּךָ לַהֲרֹג אוֹתָם שֶׁאַתָּה מֵבִיא שִׁבְיָה.
|
| 23And he prepared for them a lavish feast, and they ate and drank, and he sent them away and they went to their masters; and Aramean troops no longer continued to invade the land of Israel. |
|
כגוַיִּכְרֶ֨ה לָהֶ֜ם כֵּרָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֗ה וַיֹּֽאכְלוּ֙ וַיִּשְׁתּ֔וּ וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֔ם וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ אֶל־אֲדֹֽנֵיהֶ֑ם וְלֹֽא־יָ֚סְפוּ עוֹד֙ גְּדוּדֵ֣י אֲרָ֔ם לָב֖וֹא בְּאֶ֥רֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל: |
| And he prepared Heb. וַיִכְרֶה an expression of preparation of a meal. |
|
וַיִּכְרֶה
לְשׁוֹן תִּקּוּן סְעוּדָה.
|
| 24And it was after this, that Ben-Hadad the king of Aram, mustered all his camp; and he went up and besieged Samaria. |
|
כדוַֽיְהִי֙ אַחֲרֵי־כֵ֔ן וַיִּקְבֹּ֛ץ בֶּן־הֲדַ֥ד מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲרָ֖ם אֶת־כָּל־מַחֲנֵ֑הוּ וַיַּ֕עַל וַיָּ֖צַר עַל־שֹׁמְרֽוֹן: |
| 25Now there was a severe famine in Samaria, and behold they were besieging it, until a donkey's head sold for eighty silver pieces and a quarter of a kab of doves' dung sold for five silver pieces. |
|
כהוַיְהִ֨י רָעָ֚ב גָּדוֹל֙ בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן וְהִנֵּ֖ה צָרִ֣ים עָלֶ֑יהָ עַ֣ד הֱי֚וֹת רֹאשׁ־חֲמוֹר֙ בִּשְׁמֹנִ֣ים כֶּ֔סֶף וְרֹ֛בַע הַקַּ֥ב דִּבְיוֹנִ֖ים (כתיב חִרְייוֹנִ֖ים) בַּחֲמִשָּׁה־כָֽסֶף: |
| dove’s dung [Heb.] divyonim; dung that flows from the doves. |
|
דִּבְיוֹנִים
זֶבֶל הַזָּב מִן הַיּוֹנִים.
|
| 26And the king of Israel was passing on the wall, when a woman cried out to him, saying, "Save [me] my lord the king!" |
|
כווַֽיְהִי֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עֹבֵ֖ר עַל־הַחֹמָ֑ה וְאִשָּׁ֗ה צָעֲקָ֚ה אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הוֹשִׁ֖יעָה אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ: |
| “Save me, my lord the king!” He thought she was asking for food. |
|
הוֹשִׁיעָה אֲדֹנִי הַמֶּלֶךְ
כְּסָבוּר שֶׁשּׁוֹאֶלֶת מְזוֹנוֹת.
|
| 27And he said, "If the Lord will not save you, whence shall I save you? From the threshing floor or from the winepress?" |
|
כזוַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אַל־יוֹשִׁעֵ֣ךְ יְהֹוָ֔ה מֵאַ֖יִן אֽוֹשִׁיעֵ֑ךְ הֲמִן־הַגֹּ֖רֶן א֥וֹ מִן־הַיָּֽקֶב: |
| 28And the king said to her, "What troubles you?" And she said, "This woman said to me, 'Give your son and let us eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow.' |
|
כחוַיֹּֽאמֶר־לָ֥הּ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מַה־לָּ֑ךְ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר הָאִשָּׁ֨ה הַזֹּ֜את אָמְרָ֣ה אֵלַ֗י תְּנִ֚י אֶת־בְּנֵךְ֙ וְנֹאכְלֶ֣נּוּ הַיּ֔וֹם וְאֶת־בְּנִ֖י נֹאכַ֥ל מָחָֽר: |
| 29And we cooked my son and ate him. And I said to her the next day 'Give up your son and let us eat him.' But she hid her son." |
|
כטוַנְּבַשֵּׁ֥ל אֶת־בְּנִ֖י וַנֹּֽאכְלֵ֑הוּ וָאֹמַ֨ר אֵלֶ֜יהָ בַּיּ֣וֹם הָאַחֵ֗ר תְּנִ֚י אֶת־בְּנֵךְ֙ וְנֹ֣אכְלֶ֔נּוּ וַתַּחְבִּ֖א אֶת־בְּנָֽהּ: |
| But she hid her son dead, and wants to eat him alone. |
|
וַתַּחְבִּא אֶת בְּנָהּ
מֵת, וְרוֹצָה לְאָכְלוֹ לְבַדָּהּ.
|
| 30And it was when the king heard the woman's words that he rent his garments while he was passing on the wall, and the people saw, and behold there was sackcloth on his flesh underneath. |
|
לוַיְהִי֩ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֚י הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ וַיִּקְרַ֣ע אֶת־בְּגָדָ֔יו וְה֖וּא עֹבֵ֣ר עַל־הַחֹמָ֑ה וַיַּ֣רְא הָעָ֔ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה הַשַּׂ֛ק עַל־בְּשָׂר֖וֹ מִבָּֽיִת: |
| and the people saw the sackcloth under his garments through the tear. |
|
וַיַּרְא הָעָם
דֶּרֶךְ הַקֶּרַע, אֶת הַשַּׂק תַּחַת בְּגָדָיו.
|
| 31And he said, "So shall God do to me and so shall He continue, if Elisha the son of Shaphat's head remain on him today." |
|
לאוַיֹּ֕אמֶר כֹּֽה־יַעֲשֶׂה־לִּ֥י אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְכֹ֣ה יוֹסִ֑ף אִֽם־יַעֲמֹ֞ד רֹ֣אשׁ אֱלִישָׁ֧ע בֶּן־שָׁפָ֛ט עָלָ֖יו הַיּֽוֹם: |
| If Elisha the son of Shaphat’s head remain for he is able to beg for mercy. |
|
אִם יַעֲמֹד רֹאשׁ אֱלִישָׁע
שֶׁהַיְכֹלֶת בְּיָדוֹ לְבַקֵּשׁ רַחֲמִים.
|
| 32And Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him: and he sent a man from before him. When the messenger had not yet arrived, he said to the elders, "Have you seen that this son of a murderer has sent to remove my head? See that when the messenger comes that you close the door and you shall hold the door fast against him. Surely, the sound of his master's footsteps will follow him." |

לבוֶאֱלִישָׁע֙ ישֵׁ֣ב בְּבֵית֔וֹ וְהַזְּקֵנִ֖ים ישְׁבִ֣ים אִתּ֑וֹ וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח אִ֜ישׁ מִלְּפָנָ֗יו בְּטֶ֣רֶם יָבֹא֩ הַמַּלְאָ֨ךְ אֵלָ֜יו וְה֣וּא | אָמַ֣ר אֶל־הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים הַרְאִיתֶם֙ כִּֽי־שָׁלַ֞ח בֶּן־הַֽמְרַצֵּ֚חַ הַזֶּה֙ לְהָסִ֣יר אֶת־רֹאשִׁ֔י רְא֣וּ | כְּבֹ֣א הַמַּלְאָ֗ךְ סִגְר֚וּ הַדֶּ֙לֶת֙ וּלְחַצְתֶּ֚ם אֹתוֹ֙ בַּדֶּ֔לֶת הֲל֗וֹא ק֛וֹל רַגְלֵ֥י אֲדֹנָ֖יו אַחֲרָֽיו: |
| and he sent a man from before him The king sent [a man] to kill him, and when that messenger had not yet come to Elisha, [and he was] revealed to him through the divine spirit, and he said to the elders…. and behold the messenger was coming down to him and the king was after him. |

וַיִּשְׁלַח אִישׁ מִלְּפָנָיו
הַמֶּלֶךְ שָׁלַח לְהָרְגוֹ, וּבְטֶרֶם יָבֹא אוֹתוֹ הַמַּלְאָךְ אֶל אֱלִישָׁע, וְהוּא נִגְלָה לוֹ בְּרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ, וְאָמַר אֶל הַזְּקֵנִים: וְהִנֵּה הַמַּלְאָךְ יוֹרֵד אֵלָיו וְהַמֶּלֶךְ אַחֲרָיו.

| 33While he was still speaking with them, behold the messenger was coming down to him. And he said, "Behold, this calamity is from the Lord. What more can I hope for from the Lord?" |
|
לגעוֹדֶ֙נּוּ֙ מְדַבֵּ֣ר עִמָּ֔ם וְהִנֵּ֥ה הַמַּלְאָ֖ךְ יֹרֵ֣ד אֵלָ֑יו וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּֽה־זֹ֚את הָֽרָעָה֙ מֵאֵ֣ת יְהֹוָ֔ה מָֽה־אוֹחִ֥יל לַיהֹוָ֖ה עֽוֹד: |
| And he said The king [said] |
|
וַיֹּאמֶר
הַמֶּלֶךְ.
|
| Behold, this calamity is from the Lord This is one of the curses that He cursed through Moses, (Deut. 28:53) “And you will eat the fruit of your womb… during the siege and in the straitness…” |
|
הִנֵּה זֹאת הָרָעָה מֵאֵת ה'
זֹאת אַחַת מִן הַקְּלָלוֹת שֶׁקִּלֵּל עַל יְדֵי משֶׁה: וְאָכַלְתָּ פְּרִי בִטְנְךָ בְּמָצוֹר וּבְמָצוֹק וְגוֹ'.

| What more can I hope for from the Lord? To save? It will surely not avail. |
|
מָה אוֹחִיל לַה' עוֹד
לְהוֹשִׁיעַ, הֲלֹא לֹא יוֹעִיל.
