Chapter 16

1And the word of the Lord was to Jehu, the son of Hanani about Baasha saying,
2"Since I have elevated you from the dust, and made you prince over My people, Israel, and you have gone in the way of Jeroboam and you have caused My people Israel to sin and to anger Me with their sins.
3Behold I will expunge after Baasha and after his house, and I will make your house as the house of Jeroboam the son of Nabat.
4The dead of Baasha in the city the dogs will eat, and the dead of Baasha in the field the fowl of the sky will eat.
5The rest of the event of Baasha and what he did and his mighty deeds, are written in the book of chronicles of the kings of Israel.
6And Baasha lay with his fathers, and he was buried in Tirzah, and Elah his son reigned in his place.
7Nevertheless, in the hand of Jehu, the son of Hanani the prophet, was the word of the Lord concerning Baasha and concerning his house and because of all the iniquity which he had done in the presence of the Lord to anger Him with the work of his hands, to be as the house of Jeroboam, and because he had slain him.
Nevertheless, in the hand of Jehu the son of Hanani, the prophet, was the word of the Lord concerning Baasha: As though to say: Behold Elah reigned. Nevertheless, the word of the Lord was already in the hand of Jehu that his kingdom would not last.
and because he had slain him: Since he too, committed the same sins, [lit. went in his sins,] it is found that he should not have slain him. He was, therefore, punished for his murder. So do we find in Hosea (1:4), “And I will visit the blood of Jezreel upon the house of Jehu.” Since they did not turn away from Ahab’s ways, they were punished for their murder.
8In the twenty-sixth year of Asa, king of Judah, Elah the son of Baasha ruled over Israel in Tirzah for two years.
9And his servant Zimri, captain of half the chariots, conspired against him while he was in Tirzah drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza who was [appointed] over the household in Tirzah.
captain of half his chariots: He and another were captains over the chariots.
10And Zimri came and smote him and slew him in the twenty-seventh year of Asa the king of Judah, and he reigned in his stead.
11And it was when he reigned, as he sat on his throne, that he smote the entire house of Baasha; he did not leave him with any males nor his kinsfolk nor his friends.
any males: nor his kinfolk nor his friends.
12And Zimri destroyed the entire house of Baasha as the word of the Lord which He had spoken concerning Baasha through Jehu the prophet.

14The rest of the events of Elah and all that he did are they written in the book of Chronicles of the kings of Israel.
15During the twenty-seventh year of Asa, the king of Judah, Zimri reigned for seven days in Tirzah while the people were encamped around Gibbethon, of the Philistines.
16And the people who were encamped, heard saying, "Zimri rebelled and has also slain the king" and all of Israel pronounced Omri the commander-in-chief of the army, king of Israel on that day in the camp.

18And it was when Zimri saw that the city was captured, that he went into the inner chamber of the king's palace, and he burnt over him the king's palace with fire, and he died.
19Because of his sins which he sinned, to do bad in the eyes of the Lord, to go in the way of Jeroboam and in his sins which he did, to cause Israel to sin.
20And the rest of the events of Zimri and his rebellion that he rebelled, are written in the book of Chronicles of the kings of Israel.
21Then the people of Israel were divided in two. Half of the people were after Tibni the son of Ginath, to proclaim him king, and half after Omri.
22And the people that followed Omri overpowered those who were after Tibni, the son of Ginath. Tibni died, and Omri reigned.
And Tibni died: When Asa took Omri’s daughter in marriage for Jehoshaphat his son, they killed Tibni, when they saw Omri’s importance. In Seder Olam (Ch. 17).
23In the thirty-first year of Asa the king of Judah, Omri ruled over Israel twelve years-in Tirzah, he ruled six years.
In the thirty-first year of Asa… Omri ruled: a complete, [uncontested,] reign. Five years was [the duration] of his conflict with Tibni, from the twenty-seventh year of Asa until the thirty-first.
twelve years: was the total, five years in conflict and seven with a complete reign. It is impossible to say [that he reigned] twelve years uncontested, for Ahab his son reigned in the thirty-eighth year of Asa.
in Tirzah he ruled six years: while he had not yet built Samaria.
24And he bought the mountain of Samaria from Shemer for two talents of silver; he built up the mountain and called the name of the city which he built, after the name of Shemer, the lord of the mountain, Samaria.

34During his days, Hiel the Bethelite built Jericho; with Abiram his firstborn, he laid its foundation, and with Seguv his youngest son, he set up its gates, according to the word of the Lord that He had spoken through Joshua, the son of Nun.
Hiel the Bethelite: Heb. ביתהאלי, similar to “Jesse the Bethlehemite (ביתהלחמי)” (I Sam. 16:1), and it does not say הביתלחמי. And so, “Joshua the Bethshemeshite (ביתהשמשי)” in the Book of Sam. (I 6:14), and not הביתשמשי, and so, “In Ofrah of the Abiezerites (אבי העזרי)” (Jud. 6:25), and it does not say, האבי עזרי. Some interpret ביתהאלי [from the word אלה, a curse,] since he accepted upon himself Joshua’s curses, “Cursed be the man… that rises up and builds…” (Jos. 6:26). Our Rabbis stated, Hiel was of the tribe of Benjamin, and Jericho belonged to Jehoshaphat [king of Judea]. Why does Scripture relate him to Ahab [king of Israel]? For a curse is related to a cursed one.
with Abiram his firstborn he laid its foundation: When he laid its foundation, his firstborn son died, and he buried him and continued to bury all his sons until the last one died when he erected the portals. Now, these were Joshua’s curses, “With [the loss of] his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and with [the loss of] his youngest son shall he set up its gates” (Jos. 6:26).
