1King Solomon loved many foreign women and the daughter of Pharaoh; Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites. |

and Pharaoh’s daughter. She too was one of the foreign women, but since she was beloved by him more than all of them, she was counted separately. Similarly, (II Sam. 2: 30) “… and there were missing of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel.” |
וְאֶת בַּת פַּרְעֹה.

2Of the nations about which the Lord had said to the Children of Israel, "You shall not go (mingle) among them and they shall not come among you, for certainly they will sway your heart after their dieties." To these did Solomon cleave to love [them]. |

4And it was at the time of Solomon's old age, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not whole with the Lord, His God, like the heart of David his father. |

5And Solomon went after Ashtoreth, the goddess of the Zidonians and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. |

6And Solomon did what was displeasing to the Lord, and he was not completely devoted to the Lord as was David his father. |

7Then did Solomon build a high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab on the mountain that is before Jerusalem and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. |

Then did Solomon build a high place. Our Rabbis said, since he did not protest against his wives, it is referred to on his name. |

This is what is referred to in the Book of Samuel (II 8:13): “And David made for himself a name when he returned from smiting the Edomites,” for all were praising him as a kind man who buried his slain. And so Scripture says concerning the wars of Gog and Magog: (Ez 39:13) “And they will bury all the people of the land, and it will be for them for a name.” [However,] Jonathan [translated]: לְחַלָצָא יַתקְטִילַיָא, to strip the slain, to take their clothing. |

but not for all times.. For in the days of the Messiah the kingdom will be restored to him. In Seder Olam (ch. 15) I found: “I shall afflict David’s descendants because of this. Corresponding to the thirty-six years that Solomon was married to Pharaoh’s daughter, for he married her during the fourth year of his reign. Corresponding to this, the decree was promulgated on the kingdom of the house of David to be divided. The kingdom should have been restored, however, in Asa’s time, in the sixteenth year of his reign, but he sinned by sending a bribe to the king of Aram (below 15:18), and did not depend on the Most Holy, Blessed be He. This is the meaning of that which is stated in Chronicles (II 16:1). In the thirty-sixth year of Asa’s reign Baasha built the high place.” This is impossible, since Asa buried Baasha in the twenty-seventh year of his reign (i.e., Baasha died in the twenty-seventh year of Asa’s reignI Kings 15:33). Rather, the sixteenth year of his reign, Scripture calls “the thirty-sixth,” for they are the end of thirty-six years from the division of the kingdom, and Scripture tells us that in that year Asa sinned. Thus we explain: “But not for all times,” [but thirty-six years]. |
