1And Saul's son heard that Abner had died in Hebron, and his hands became feeble, and all Israel were dismayed. |

אוַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע בֶּן־שָׁא֗וּל כִּ֣י מֵ֚ת אַבְנֵר֙ בְּחֶבְר֔וֹן וַיִּרְפּ֖וּ יָדָ֑יו וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נִבְהָֽלוּ: |
2And Saul's son had two men, the heads of troops. The name of one was Baanah and the name of the second was Rechab, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, of the sons of Benjamin, (for Beeroth was also counted to Benjamin. |

בוּשְׁנֵ֣י אֲנָשִׁ֣ים שָׂרֵֽי־גְדוּדִ֣ים הָי֪וּ בֶן־שָׁא֠וּ֩ל שֵׁם֩ הָאֶחָ֨ד בַּֽעֲנָ֜ה וְשֵׁ֧ם הַשֵּׁנִ֣י רֵכָ֗ב בְּנֵ֛י רִמּ֥וֹן הַבְּאֶֽרֹתִ֖י מִבְּנֵ֣י בִנְיָמִ֑ן כִּ֚י גַּם־בְּאֵר֔וֹת תֵּחָשֵׁ֖ב עַל־בִּנְיָמִֽן: |
And Saul’s son had two men, the heads of troops. (lit., And two men, the heads of troops were Saul’s sons) were to Saul’s son (or Saul’s son had), like: “to the appointed time which Samuel” (I Sam. 13: 8, meaning ‘which was to Samuel’ or ‘of Samuel’). |

היו בן שאול.
היו לבן שאול, כמו (שמואל-א יג ח): למועד אשר שמואל, אשר לשמואל:

3And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim and they were living there until this day). |
|
גוַיִּבְרְח֥וּ הַבְּאֵרֹתִ֖ים גִּתָּ֑יְמָה וַֽיִּהְיוּ־שָׁ֣ם גָּרִ֔ים עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה: |
And the Beerothites had fled to Gittaim. when Saul died, for the Israelites abandoned the cities in the environs of the Philistines, as is mentioned above (I Sam. 31:7). Then the Beerothites fled. |

ויברחו הבארתים.
כשמת שאול, שעזבו בני ישראל הערים שסביבות פלשתים, כמו שאמור למעלה, אז ברחו הבארותים:

4And Jonathan, the son of Saul had a son who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news of Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel, and his nurse carried him and fled; and it was in her haste to flee, that he fell and became lame, and his name was Mephibosheth. |

דוְלִיהֽוֹנָתָן֙ בֶּן־שָׁא֔וּל בֵּ֖ן נְכֵ֣ה רַגְלָ֑יִם בֶּן־חָמֵ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֣ים הָיָ֡ה בְּבֹ֣א שְׁמֻעַת֩ שָׁא֨וּל וִיהוֹנָתָ֜ן מִֽיִּזְרְעֶ֗אל וַתִּשָּׂאֵ֚הוּ אֹֽמַנְתּוֹ֙ וַתָּנֹ֔ס וַיְהִ֞י בְּחָפְזָ֥הּ לָנ֛וּס וַיִּפֹּ֥ל וַיִּפָּסֵ֖חַ וּשְׁמ֥וֹ מְפִיבֽשֶׁת: |
And Jonathan the son of Saul had. Scripture goes on to recount how the kingdom was taken away from the house of Saul. He and his son were killed. This one remaining son was killed in bed, and Jonathan’s son fell and became lame (hence unfit for the throne). |

וליהונתן בן שאול.
מונה והולך איך נשבת מלכות מבית שאול, הוא ובניו נהרגו, וזה הנשאר, הרגוהו על משכבו, ובנו של יהונתן נפל ויפסח:

5And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, went, and came in the heat of the day to the house of Ish-bosheth, when he was taking his midday rest. |
|
הוַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ בְּנֵֽי־רִמּ֚וֹן הַבְּאֵֽרֹתִי֙ רֵכָ֣ב וּבַעֲנָ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ כְּחֹ֣ם הַיּ֔וֹם אֶל־בֵּ֖ית אִ֣ישׁ בּ֑שֶׁת וְה֣וּא שֹׁכֵ֔ב אֵ֖ת מִשְׁכַּ֥ב הַֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם: |
6And they came inside the house [as] buyers of wheat, and they struck him under the fifth rib, and Rechab and Baanah his brother escaped. |

ווְ֠הֵנָּה בָּ֜אוּ עַד־תּ֚וֹךְ הַבַּ֙יִת֙ לֹקְחֵ֣י חִטִּ֔ים וַיַּכֻּ֖הוּ אֶל־הַחֹ֑מֶשׁ וְרֵכָ֛ב וּבַעֲנָ֥ה אָחִ֖יו נִמְלָֽטוּ: |
and they came to the middle of the house. with merchants who were buying wheat. |
|
והנה באו עד תוך הבית.
עם תגרים לוקחי חטים:

7And they came into the house and he was lying on his bed in his bedroom, and they struck him and put him to death, and they removed his head, and they took his head and went by way of the plain all night. |
|
זוַיָּבֹ֣אוּ הַבַּ֗יִת וְהֽוּא־שֹׁכֵ֚ב עַל־מִטָּתוֹ֙ בַּחֲדַ֣ר מִשְׁכָּב֔וֹ וַיַּכֻּ֙הוּ֙ וַיְמִתֻ֔הוּ וַיָּסִ֖ירוּ אֶת־רֹאשׁ֑וֹ וַיִּקְחוּ֙ אֶת־רֹאשׁ֔וֹ וַיֵּֽלְכ֛וּ דֶּ֥רֶךְ הָעֲרָבָ֖ה כָּל־הַלָּֽיְלָה: |
8And they brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David to Hebron, and they said to the king, "Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul your enemy, who sought your life. And the Lord has granted my lord the king vengeance this day of Saul and of his seed." |

חוַ֠יָּבִאוּ אֶת־רֹ֨אשׁ אִֽישׁ־בּ֥שֶׁת אֶל־דָּוִד֘ חֶבְרוֹן֒ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ הִנֵּֽה־רֹ֣אשׁ אִֽישׁ־בּ֗שֶׁת בֶּן־שָׁאוּל֙ אֹֽיִבְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּקֵּ֖שׁ אֶת־נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ וַיִּתֵּ֣ן יְ֠הֹוָה לַֽאדֹנִ֨י הַמֶּ֚לֶךְ נְקָמוֹת֙ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה מִשָּׁא֖וּל וּמִזַּרְעֽוֹ: |
9And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite and said to them, "As the Lord lives, Who delivered my person from every distress. |

טוַיַּ֨עַן דָּוִ֜ד אֶת־רֵכָ֣ב | וְאֶת־בַּעֲנָ֣ה אָחִ֗יו בְּנֵ֛י רִמּ֥וֹן הַבְּאֵֽרֹתִ֖י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֑ם חַי־יְהֹוָ֕ה אֲשֶׁר־פָּדָ֥ה אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֖י מִכָּל־צָרָֽה: |
10That he who told me saying, 'Behold, Saul is dead,' and he was in his own eyes as a herald of good tidings, I took hold of him and slew him in Ziglag, who [had expected] me to give him a reward for good tidings. |

יכִּ֣י הַמַּגִּיד֩ לִ֨י לֵאמֹ֜ר הִנֵּה־מֵ֣ת שָׁא֗וּל וְהֽוּא־הָיָ֚ה כִמְבַשֵּׂר֙ בְּעֵינָ֔יו וָאֹחֲזָ֣ה ב֔וֹ וָאֶהְרְגֵ֖הוּ בְּצִֽקְלָ֑ג אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְתִתִּי־ל֖וֹ בְּשׂרָֽה: |
who (expected) me to give him a reward for good tidings. who thought to make me happy in order that I give him a reward for his good tidings |

לתתי לו בשורה.
אשר דימה לשמחני, למען תתי לו שכר בשורתו:
|
11'How much more when wicked men have slain an innocent man in his own house on his bed. And now, shall I not hold you accountable for his blood, and remove you from the earth?" |
|
יאאַ֞ף כִּֽי־אֲנָשִׁ֣ים רְשָׁעִ֗ים הָרְג֧וּ אֶת־אִישׁ־צַדִּ֛יק בְּבֵית֖וֹ עַל־מִשְׁכָּב֑וֹ וְעַתָּ֗ה הֲל֨וֹא אֲבַקֵּ֚שׁ אֶת־דָּמוֹ֙ מִיֶּדְכֶ֔ם וּבִעַרְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִן־הָאָֽרֶץ: |
12And David commanded the young men, and they slew them, and cut off their hands and feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But the head of Ish-bosheth they took and buried in the grave of Abner in Hebron. |

יבוַיְצַו֩ דָּוִ֨ד אֶת־הַנְּעָרִ֜ים וַיַּהַרְג֗וּם וַֽיְקַצְּצ֚וּ אֶת־יְדֵיהֶם֙ וְאֶת־רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּתְל֥וּ עַל־הַבְּרֵכָ֖ה בְּחֶבְר֑וֹן וְאֶ֨ת רֹ֚אשׁ אִֽישׁ־בּ֙שֶׁת֙ לָקָ֔חוּ וַיִּקְבְּר֥וּ בְקֶֽבֶר־אַבְנֵ֖ר בְּחֶבְרֽוֹן: |
