Chapter 17

1And there was a lot for the tribe of Manasseh, for he was firstborn of Joseph; for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, because he was a man of war, therefore, he had Gilead and Bashan.
for Machir the firstborn of Manasseh: Therefore, he took first in Moses’ days on the other side of the Jordan, and had Gilead and Bashan.
2There was also a lot for the rest of the children of Manasseh according to their families; for the children of Abiezer, and for the children of Helek, and for the children of Asriel, and for the children of Shechem, and for the children of Hepher, and for the children of Shemida. These are the male children of Manasseh the son of Joseph, by their families.
3But Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters; and these are the names of his daughter: Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah.
4And they came near before Eleazar the priest, and before Joshua the son of Nun, and before the princes, saying, "The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our brothers." According to the commandment of the Lord, he gave them an inheritance among the brothers of their father.
5And there fell ten portions to Manasseh, besides the land of Gilead and Bashan, which is on the other side of the Jordan.
And there fell ten portions to Manasseh: i.e., six for the six fathers’ houses enumerated above, and four for the daughters of Zelophehad, not that each one should be considered an individual father’s house, [for they were five - Kara] but they received four shares: (1) The share of their father who was one of those who left Egypt, and according to the number of those who left Egypt the land was apportioned; (2) and his share with his brothers in the property of Hepher, who was also one of those who left Egypt; and (3) he was the firstborn, and received two portions; and (4) in addition, they had the share of their father’s brother, who died in the wilderness without children, and they received inheritance in his share. Our Rabbis stated this in Baba Bathra. It was not necessary for the scripture to relate to us the number of the daughters’ shares, except to teach us that they received the firstborn share, and to inform us that Eretz Israel was an inherited share which belonged to them from the time of their forefathers, for otherwise, the firstborn does not receive an extra share of that which is fit to come into the father’s possession, as he does in that which the father had already acquired.
6Because the daughters of Manasseh had an inheritance among his sons; and the rest of Manasseh's sons had the land of Gilead.
and the rest… had the land of Gilead: i.e., the rest of Manasseh’s sons had the land of Gilead which was on the other side of the Jordan.
7And the border of Manasseh was from Asher to Michmetath, that is before Shechem; and the border went along on the right to the inhabitants of En-tappuah.
8The land of Tappuah belonged to Manasseh, but Tappuah on the border of Manasseh belonged to the children of Ephraim;
The land of Tappuah: i.e., the villages and suburbs, but the city of Tappuah itself, belonged to the children of Ephraim.
on the border of Manasseh: on the boundary of Manasseh, at the end of his border.
9And the border descended to the brook Kanah, southward of the brook. These cities of Ephraim are among the cities of Manasseh; the border of Manasseh was on the north side of the river, and its outgoings were to the sea.
These cities: from Tappuah to the brook of Kanah belonged to Ephraim among the cities of Manasseh.
10Southward it was Ephraim's and northward it was Manasseh's, and the sea was his border; and they met in Asher on the north, and in Issachar on the east.
Southward it was Ephraim’s: Ephraim received his share from the south, toward the land between the children of Judah and the rest of the tribes.
and northward it was Manasseh’s: Manasseh received the land to the north.
11And Manasseh had in Issachar and in Asher: Beth-shean and her towns, and Ibleam and her towns, and the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of 'En-dor and her towns, and the inhabitants of Taanach and her towns, and the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns, the three regions.
the three regions: “three provinces” (Jonathan). The three regions mentioned here were of Dor and 'En-dor, as aforementioned in this book: “The king of Dor of the regions of Dor,” and in another verse the Scripture states: “and in the regions of Dor on the west.” And here the Scripture states: “The inhabitants of Dor and her towns,” which were the three regions that belonged to her.
12And the children of Manasseh could not drive out the inhabitants of these cities, but the Canaanites were content to dwell in this land.
were content: Heb. וַיּוֹאֶל, was willing.
13And it came to pass, when the children of Israel became strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, but did not drive them out.
14And the children of Joseph spoke to Joshua, saying, "Why have you given me one lot and one portion for an inheritance, seeing I am a numerous people, forasmuch as the Lord has blessed me thus?"
And the children of Joseph spoke: i.e., The tribe of Manasseh.
forasmuch as the Lord has blessed me thus?: Forasmuch as you have seen that my number has increased from the first count to the second count by 20,500, signified by the numerical value of כֹּה (25). In the first count you find in Manasseh in the book of Numbers 32,200, and in the Sidrah Pinchas, 52,700. Another explanation is: forasmuch as the Lord has blessed me even until כה, the blessing which was bestowed on Abraham: (“So כֹּה) shall be your seed,” was fulfilled in me. And according to peshat, forasmuch as the Lord has blessed me thus, as you see.
15And Joshua said to them, "If you are a numerous people, then go up to the forest, and cut down for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if Mount Ephraim is too confined for you."
If you are a numerous people: you have strength to cut down forests and to clear them, similar to that which we call essarter in French, and there you shall build cities.
and cut down: Heb. וּבֵרֵאתָ, an expression of cutting, like: And they will cut them (וּבָרֵא אוֹתְהָן) with their swords, essarteras in French.
confined: Heb.
16And the children of Joseph said, "The hill is not enough for us; and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the Valley of Jezreel."
The hill is not enough: For it is too confined for us, as you said.
is not enough: Heb.
iron chariots: and what you say, to go up to the forest and to conquer in the land of the Perizzites and the giants [Rephaim], is no easy task, for those Canaanites are a mighty nation and have iron chariots. Do not wonder if the Scripture calls the Perizzites and Rephaim Canaanites, for they were all children of Canaan.
17And Joshua spoke to the house of Joseph, to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, "You are a numerous people, and have great power; you shall not have one lot;   יזוַיֹּ֚אמֶר יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵ֔ף לְאֶפְרַ֥יִם וְלִמְנַשֶּׁ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר עַם־רַ֣ב אַתָּ֗ה וְכֹ֚חַ גָּדוֹל֙ לָ֔ךְ לֹא־יִֽהְיֶ֥ה לְךָ֖ גּוֹרָ֥ל אֶחָֽד:
18But the mountain shall be yours, for it is a forest, and you shall cut it down; and its outgoings shall be yours, for you shall drive out the Canaanite, though he has iron chariots, and though he is strong.
But the mountain shall be yours: the one concerning which I said to you, “go up to the forest.”
for it is a forest, and you shall cut it down: for it is a forest, and it is only fit for a numerous people, who will cut it down and clear it.
and you shall cut it down: for you are a great people.
for you shall drive out the Canaanite: since you are a great people.
because he has iron chariots: and none of the other tribes is big enough to wage war with him.
for he is strong: and you have the ability, and must drive him out. Our Rabbis explained: Go up to the forest - Hide in the forests lest the evil eye have power over you.
