| 1A song of ascents. In my distress I called to the Lord, and He answered me. |

אשִׁ֗יר הַמַּֽ֫עֲל֥וֹת אֶל־יְ֖הֹוָה בַּצָּרָ֣תָה לִּ֑י קָ֜רָ֗אתִי וַֽיַּֽעֲנֵֽנִי: |
| A song of ascents: which the Levites will recite on the fifteen steps that go down from the Israelites’ court to the Women’s court, and there are fifteen psalms entitled “A song of ascents” (Suc. 5:4, Mid 2:5). And our Rabbis said that David composed them to raise the deep, as is explained in Tractate Succah (53a). And according to the Aggadah (Yerushalmi Sanh. 10:2, 52b), it is to be interpreted: A song for a hundred steps (שיר למאה עולות). |

שיר המעלות:
שיאמרו הלוים אותו על חמש עשרה מעלות היורדות מעזרת ישראל עד עזרת נשים ויש כאן ט"ו מזמורים של שיר המעלות ורבותינו אמרו שיסדן דוד להעלות את התהום כמו שמפורש במסכת סוכה, ולפי אגדה פתרונו שיר למאה עולות:

| 2O Lord, save my soul from false lips, from a deceitful tongue. |
|
ביְהֹוָ֗ה הַצִּ֣ילָה נַ֖פְשִׁי מִשְּׂפַת־שֶׁ֑קֶר מִלָּשׁ֥וֹן רְמִיָּֽה: |
| from false lips: The arm of those who hunt people with their mouth with wicked accusations. |

משפת שקר:
זרעו של הרשע שצדין את הבריות בפיהם בעלילות רשע:
|
| 3What can He give you, and what can He add to you, you deceitful tongue? |
|
גמַה־יִּתֵּ֣ן לְ֖ךָ וּמַה־יֹּסִ֥יף לָ֗ךְ לָשׁ֥וֹן רְמִיָּֽה: |
| What can He give you: [What can] the Holy One, blessed be He [give you]? |
|
מה יתן לך:
הקב"ה:
|
| and what can He add to you: [What] safeguard and walls? Behold you are placed within two walls. |
|
ומה יוסיף לך:
שמירה ומחיצות הרי את נתונה לפנים משתי מחיצות:
|
| 4Sharpened arrows of a mighty man with coals of brooms. |
|
דחִצֵּ֣י גִבּ֣וֹר שְׁנוּנִ֑ים עִ֜֗ם גַּֽחֲלֵ֥י רְתָמִֽים: |
| Sharpened arrows of a mighty man: Behold you kill in a distant place like an arrow. |
|
חצי גבור שנונים:
והרי את הורגת במקום רחוק כחץ:
|
| with coals of brooms: All coals, when extinguished on the outside, are extinguished on the inside, but these extinguish themselves on the outside but not on the inside (ibid.). Another explanation: What will He give you? What is the Holy One, blessed be He, destined to decree upon you? Arrows of a mighty man with coals of brooms. His arrows from above and Gehinnom from below. |

עם גחלי רתמים:
כל הגחלים כבו מבחוץ כבו מבפנים ואלו כבו מבחוץ ולא מבפנים ד"א מה יתן לך מה סופו של הקב"ה לגזור עליך חצי גבורים עם גחלי רתמים חצים מלמעלה וגיהנם מלמטה:

| 5Woe is to me for I have sojourned in Meshech; I dwelt among the tents of Kedar. |
|
הא֣וֹיָה לִ֖י כִּי־גַ֣רְתִּי מֶ֑שֶׁךְ שָׁ֜כַ֗נְתִּי עִם־אָֽהֳלֵ֥י קֵדָֽר: |
| Woe is to me: says the congregation of Israel, for I have already suffered in many exiles. Behold I sojourned in Meshech with the sons of Japheth in the kingdom of Persia, Greece, and Meshech. |
|
אויה לי:
אמרה כנסת ישראל כי כבר לקית בגליות רבים הרי גרתי משך עם בני יפת במלכות פרס ויון ומשך:
|
| 6For a long time, my soul dwelt with those who hate peace. |
|
ורַבַּת שָֽׁכְנָה־לָּ֣הּ נַפְשִׁ֑י עִ֜֗ם שׂוֹנֵ֥א שָׁלֽוֹם: |
| 7I am at peace, but when I speak, they [come] to [wage] war. |
|
זאֲֽנִי־שָׁ֖לוֹם וְכִ֣י אֲדַבֵּ֑ר הֵ֜֗מָּה לַמִּלְחָמָֽה: |
| I am at peace: With them. |
|
אני שלום:
עמהם:
|
| but when I speak: peacefully with them, they come to wage war with me. |
|
וכי אדבר:
עליהם שלום המה באים להלחם בי:
