| 1The word of the Lord came to me, saying: |
|
אוַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהֹוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר: |
| 2"Son of man, direct your face toward the mountains of Israel and prophesy to them. |
|
בבֶּן־אָדָ֕ם שִׂ֥ים פָּנֶ֖יךָ אֶל־הָרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהִנָּבֵ֖א אֲלֵיהֶֽם: |
| 3And you shall say; 'O mountains of Israel, hearken to the word of the Lord God. So said the Lord God to the mountains and to the hills, to the rivulets and to the valleys: Behold I bring upon you the sword, and I shall destroy your high places. |

גוְאָ֣מַרְתָּ֔ הָרֵי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שִׁמְע֖וּ דְּבַר־אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֑ה כֹּֽה־אָמַ֣ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱ֠הֹוִה לֶֽהָרִ֨ים וְלַגְּבָע֜וֹת לָֽאֲפִיקִ֣ים וְלַגֵּֽאָי֗וֹת (כתיב וְלַגֵּֽאָיֹ֗ת) הִֽנְנִ֨י אֲנִ֜י מֵבִ֚יא עֲלֵיכֶם֙ חֶ֔רֶב וְאִבַּדְתִּ֖י בָּמֽוֹתֵיכֶֽם: |
| and to the hills: [Heb. [ולגבעות is] a term expressing height. |

| 4And your altars will become desolate, and your sun gods will be broken, and I shall cast your slain ones before your idols. |

דוְנָשַׁ֙מּוּ֙ מִזְבְּח֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם וְנִשְׁבְּר֖וּ חַמָּֽנֵיכֶ֑ם וְהִפַּלְתִּי֙ חַלְלֵיכֶ֔ם לִפְנֵ֖י גִּלּֽוּלֵיכֶֽם: |
| your sun gods: חַמָּנֵיכֶם, a class of pagan idols made on the roofs [dedicated] to the sun. |

מין תבנית צלמי עכו"ם העשויין על הגגות לחמה:
|
| 5And I shall lay the corpses of the children of Israel before their idols, and I shall scatter your bones around your altars. |
|
הוְנָֽתַתִּ֗י אֶת־פִּגְרֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לִפְנֵ֖י גִּלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֑ם וְזֵֽרִיתִי֙ אֶת־עַצְמ֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם סְבִיב֖וֹת מִזְבְּחֽוֹתֵיכֶֽם: |
| 6In all your dwelling places, the cities will be laid waste and the high places will become desolate, in order that your altars be laid waste and shown to be guilty, and your idols will be broken and abolished and your sun gods will be cut down, and your works will be obliterated. |

ובְּכֹל֙ מֽוֹשְׁב֣וֹתֵיכֶ֔ם הֶֽעָרִ֣ים תֶּֽחֱרַ֔בְנָה וְהַבָּמ֖וֹת תִּישָׁ֑מְנָה לְמַעַן֩ יֶֽחֶרְב֨וּ וְיֶֽאְשְׁמ֜וּ מִזְבְּחֽוֹתֵיכֶ֗ם וְנִשְׁבְּר֚וּ וְנִשְׁבְּתוּ֙ גִּלּ֣וּלֵיכֶ֔ם וְנִגְדְּעוּ֙ חַמָּ֣נֵיכֶ֔ם וְנִמְח֖וּ מַֽעֲשֵׂיכֶֽם: |
| and shown to be guilty: Heb. ויאשמו [lit. they be made guilty.] They will be recognized for their guilt. |

| 7And the slain will fall in your midst, and you will know that I am the Lord. |
|
זוְנָפַ֥ל חָלָ֖ל בְּתֽוֹכְכֶ֑ם וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה: |
| 8But I shall leave a remnant insofar as you will have people among the nations who will escape the sword, when you are scattered in the lands. |
|
חוְהֽוֹתַרְתִּ֗י בִּֽהְי֥וֹת לָכֶ֛ם פְּלִ֥יטֵי חֶ֖רֶב בַּגּוֹיִ֑ם בְּהִזָּרֽוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם בָּֽאֲרָצֽוֹת: |
| 9And those of you that escape will remember Me among the nations where they were captured, that I yielded to their straying heart which turned away from Me and to their eyes that strayed after their idols, and they will quarrel with themselves about the evils that they did in addition to all their abominations. |
|
טוְזָֽכְר֨וּ פְלִֽיטֵיכֶ֜ם אוֹתִ֗י בַּגּוֹיִם֘ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִשְׁבּוּ־שָׁם֒ אֲשֶׁ֨ר נִשְׁבַּ֜רְתִּי אֶת־לִבָּ֣ם הַזּוֹנֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁר־סָר֙ מֵֽעָלַ֔י וְאֵת֙ עֵֽינֵיהֶ֔ם הַזֹּנ֕וֹת אַֽחֲרֵ֖י גִּלּֽוּלֵיהֶ֑ם וְנָקֹ֙טּוּ֙ בִּפְנֵיהֶ֔ם אֶל־הָֽרָעוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשׂ֔וּ לְכֹ֖ל תּֽוֹעֲבֹֽתֵיהֶֽם: |
| And those of you that escape will remember Me: My kindnesses and My compassion, that I had compassion on them when they committed iniquities before Me in their land. |
|
וזכרו פליטיכם אותי:
את חסדי ואת רחמי שהייתי מרחם עליהם בהעוותם לפני בארצם:
|
| that I yielded to their straying heart: That I yielded to them. Although their heart went astray and they turned away from Me, I begged of them, through My prophets, to return to Me, and [promised] that I will [then] do good for them, but they were unwilling. |
|
אשר נשברתי את לבם הזונה:
אשר נכנעתי אצלם אע"פ שזונה לבם וסר מעלי הייתי מבקש מהם ע"י נביאי לשוב אלי ואטיב להם ולא אבו:
|
| and they will quarrel with themselves: Heb. וְנָקֹטוּ. Menachem associated it with (Ps. 119:158): “I saw traitors, and I quarreled (וָאֶתְקוֹטָטָה).” They will quarrel with themselves for not listening to Me. Jonathan renders: וְידַנְקוּן and they will see, and so does he translate (below 9:4): “those who groan (הַנֶאֶנָקִים),” דְּמִדַנְקִין, and (Mal. 2:13): “weeping… and groaning (וַאֲנָקָה),” דְּמִדַנְקָן, demonir in Old French, to groan. |

| 10And they will know that I am the Lord; not for naught have I spoken to do this evil to them. |
|
יוְיָֽדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֑ה לֹ֚א אֶל־חִנָּם֙ דִּבַּ֔רְתִּי לַֽעֲשׂ֥וֹת לָהֶ֖ם הָֽרָעָ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת: |
| 11So said the Lord God: Strike with your hand and stamp with your foot, and say, "Ah!" about all the evil abominations of the house of Israel, who will fall by the sword, through famine, and through pestilence. |
|
יאכֹּֽה־אָמַ֞ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יֱהֹוִ֗ה הַכֵּ֨ה בְכַפְּךָ֜ וּרְקַ֚ע בְּרַגְלְךָ֙ וֶֽאֱמָר־אָ֔ח אֶ֛ל כָּל־תּֽוֹעֲב֥וֹת רָע֖וֹת בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֗ר בַּחֶ֛רֶב בָּֽרָעָ֥ב וּבַדֶּ֖בֶר יִפֹּֽלוּ: |
| and stamp: Its context implies that it means to stamp one’s foot on the ground to flatten out the mud, and this is a custom of a mourner. |
|
ורקע:
עניינו יורה עליו מכה רגלו על הארץ ומרדד את הטיט והוא דרך אבל:
|
| and say, Ah!: A cry of grief and woe. |
|
ואמר אח:
צעקת יגון ואוי:
|
| 12The one who is far away will die of the pestilence, and the one who is near will fall by the sword, and the one who survives and who is in the siege, will die of hunger, and I shall spend My fury on them. |
|
יבהָֽרָח֞וֹק בַּדֶּ֣בֶר יָמ֗וּת וְהַקָּרוֹב֙ בַּחֶ֣רֶב יִפּ֔וֹל וְהַנִּשְׁאָר֙ וְהַנָּצ֔וּר בָּֽרָעָ֖ב יָמ֑וּת וְכִלֵּיתִ֥י חֲמָתִ֖י בָּֽם: |
| and who is in the siege: Heb. והנצור, one who is gathered into the city when they besiege it. |
|
והנצור:
הנאסף אל העיר ויצורו עליו:
|
| and I shall spend My fury: I shall finish all My fury and My desire to do evil to them. |
|
וכליתי חמתי:
אשלי' כל חרוני וחפצי ברעתם:
|
| 13And you will know that I am the Lord when their slain ones will be among their idols, around their altars, upon every hill of height, on all mountaintops and under every leafy tree and under every branchy terebinth, a place where they offered up a satisfying savor to all their idols. |

יגוִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה בִּֽהְי֣וֹת חַלְלֵיהֶ֗ם בְּתוֹךְ֙ גִּלּ֣וּלֵיהֶ֔ם סְבִיב֖וֹת מִזְבְּחֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם אֶל֩ כָּל־גִּבְעָ֨ה רָמָ֜ה בְּכֹ֣ל | רָאשֵׁ֣י הֶֽהָרִ֗ים וְתַ֨חַת כָּל־עֵ֚ץ רַֽעֲנָן֙ וְתַ֙חַת֙ כָּל־אֵלָ֣ה עֲבֻתָּ֔ה מְק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֚ר נָֽתְנוּ־שָׁם֙ רֵ֣יחַ נִיחֹ֔חַ לְכֹ֖ל גִּלּֽוּלֵיהֶֽם: |

| 14I shall extend My hand upon them, and I shall make the land a desolation and an astonishment -[starting] from the desert of Diblah-in all their dwelling places, and they shall know that I am the Lord.' " |

ידוְנָטִ֚יתִי אֶת־יָדִי֙ עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם וְנָֽתַתִּ֨י אֶת־הָאָ֜רֶץ שְׁמָמָ֚ה וּמְשַׁמָּה֙ מִמִּדְבַּ֣ר דִּבְלָ֔תָה בְּכֹ֖ל מֽוֹשְׁבֽוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם וְיָֽדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהֹוָֽה: |
| a desolation: Heb. שְּׁמָמָה, without an inhabitant. |
